Being I know that northern New England ham I trust his audio mods BUT cosmetically that transmitter is RUINED! That's even worse than the beautifully restored Valiant I came across at a 'fester once, too beautiful in fact. Funny, Johnson never coated anything with shiny clear lacquer. :sick

It might be heresy, but IMHO, no great loss.

Real Radios come in Heathkit Green.

You want heresy?

Wait 'til I gut two of those and convert one to cover the WARC bands...then stuff the works in a 19" 3U rack mount box.

Digital readout, built-in keyer, S-meters, RIT, power/VSWR monitoring...or I could just sell both "as is" ... :snicker:

Yeah, but it was probably modded out by Tron. You don't get radios modded by Tron every day. Besides, it's not appearance that is important. It's performance. :snicker: :snicker:

I don't know what the big deal is. This is my HF operating position. I actually built this using an old Curtis Mathis TV and a box of sweep tubes I found at a yard sale for 10 bucks.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c79/bebop5/e13030image4.jpg

The large silver covered warming trays are converted to be 6m cavitrons.

That place is an absolute mess.
I don't know how you can get any kind of
efficiency in a shack like that.

Here's a shot of my RTTY operating position -

Tron mods are easy to come by being well published BUT having been touched by The Holy Hands of The Great and Magnificent One himself it must be considered blessed and sacred.

Not mine but if I knew in 2006 that it would be the last one I'd see, maybe I would have bought it. 2006 was a great year for vintage gear at Shelby.

Gear availability - especially where vintage or collectible stuff is concerned - does seem to be cyclical in nature. I was discussing the R-820 with an admin of another radio site. In 2005 I had one. In 2006 I had three; the second two were bought within a month and a half of each other and during a year's time there must have been at least one per month listed for sale online.

Now? Zip, zero, nada.

About 6 months after the next big thing from Japan, TenTec or Elecraft is shown at Dayton, many of the old "classics" are sold off to finance purchase of the new WondeRadio. I think what flushed a lot of R-820s out of hiding at the time was the introduction of the FT-9000...
