I now have Ubuntu running on 5 of the 7 machines on the property, and have introduced several friends to the OS.
They are as amazed as I am.

With that, I'd get a kick outta seeing some of your desktops (shrunk down to something reasonable, say 800x600).

Here's my uncluttered Ubuntu 9.04 desktop on my main computer ... background is a pic of a sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean
as viewed from Hatteras Island a couple of years ago. I really like some of the applets that you can run on the taskbars. On
the top, I am using the hardware sensors applet to monitor my CPU & MB temps, and the processor cooling fan speed:

Hell yeah! There are a number Ubuntu backgrounds online with some really hot ladies on them!

I usually only use those in my "man cave" however, out of respect for the little lady, who,

I'm sure you meant 1GB, and no, unfortunately I can't use it since this PC uses Rambus so I'm stuck with what I have since Rambus/RDRAM is expensive. It's an old Dell Dimension 8200.

But thanks for the offer anyway.

On a side note, I'm actually going to consolidate my laptop and desktop and simply get rid of the desktop and get a docking station/port replicator with a new laptop. Been eyeing the Sony VAIO FW series. This machine I'm using now is almost 9 years old.

No joke on the Rambus. I've got an old Dimension 8200 here, too, with 3/4 Gig in it. That second half Gig cost me almost $300 about 5 years ago. Last I checked, the only place you could find Rambus memory was on eBay, and it's still expensive.

The old 8200 keeps chugging along, though. Mine is now relegated to running an old SCSI film scanner. These days, you can build a reasonably nice desktop system for under 4 bills.

Not sure. The artist gives his thoughts on the image but I can not read the language in which it is posted, German, I think.

That reminds me of an interview with Rob Thomas. He was speaking out about the Match Box 20 song "3AM". He explained that it was about his mother contracting cancer and confinding in him for comfort which is quite contray to how most people interpreted it. Yep. As an artist, while I was growing up someone would always ask me what a drawing meant. I never thought about a meaning while drawing so I just said it means nothing. Unacceptable! People were told that art has to have a meaning so if I told them it means nothing then somehow that was grounds for them to get upset.

What I learned was to either make up bullshit and blow smoke up their hindquarter or try to be a little more honest and just say it means whatever you want.
That was the 70's.

Ya, growing up my best friend was quite good with a pencil. So good that it startled people. They always wanted to know what he was thinking when he drew something. To make it easier he always said, it's personal. What a lair. Sure his art was good but I never really swooned over it. Maybe that is because I was used to seeing it daily. Ah...I miss high school. Things have changed a lot since then and most of my friends have went to different school than I, got a job in another state, joined the military, are in jail, or dead. Truth is that I probably read Fox's news as much as I do CNN. I really don't like
either of their web page interfaces ... too "busy", too many links and too many blinkie/flashies.
I used to read CBS News the most, particularly because of their previously simple
and uncluttered interface, but now even they are changing towards the louder type
of web interface, complete with blinkie/flasies and cluttered with everything else
under the sun.

Fox, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc, all have much the same "News". The difference between
all of them is the amount of distortion slipped in between news stories. In this category,
Fox wins hands-down, with MSNBC a very close second.

Most of the "blinky flashy" stuff is from advertisers. Of course if you advertise, you want to be noticed.

There have been a few new interactive/flash stuff that's being put up now as well.

But for video, unlike CNN, FNC offers a standalone video player. Live streaming of breaking news events, NASA coverage and of course the strategy room.

If that's not your cup of tea, there's also Hulu desktop with content from Fox, NBC and ABC.

I really like it on the netbook - better than XP. Simple, and (I think) less mouse needed than XP. Very well done and the install was a snap. I *love* the software center.

Was going to show the desktop off the Mac, but couldn't figure out how to save a screen capture. So far, I think the Mac is losing the OS war here. Everything here runs a different OS (except 2 machines on XP). Got 2 on XP, one on Tiny XP, one on Vista, one on Win 7, Ubuntu One on the netbook and Snow Leopard on the Mac. Think I might switch the Vista machine to Ubuntu -- need to "learn more Linux."

Command-shift-4 saves the entire desktop, command-shift-3 saves the focused window.

Thanks! Kinda new to the Mac, so still learning.

I've got an Acer Aspire One. Got it on a buy.com sale for $279 last summer with XP and the 6-cell battery. I like it, but it's not the dual-widescreen quad core I'm used to. Mostly use it for a couch-potato computer and for when portability is nice. Great email/surfing machine on the road. It definitely gets enough use that I don't feel too bad about splurging for it.

I change my desktop as often as some East Tennesseans change their underwear. This one has been on the "radio-room" computer for a few days. It is a shot I made some years back in memory of one that A. Aubrey Bodine shot at the same location in the early 1950s. It is the split in the Old Main Line at Point of Rocks, on the Potomac. I should note, by way of edit, that the view looks southeast, and the left track is the Old Main Line and the right track is a newer iteration now used by the commuter rail to DC. To my back is the ancient Point of Rocks tunnel, which was completed in 1909 (if memory serves) and is now bypassed by the commuter tracks.

I don't yet have a mobile reader other than a conventional laptop. I downloaded and installed MobiPocket on a couple of machines in order to test it and see what literature might be readily available (free or at nominal cost) before investing in anything else. I chose MobiPocket only because it seemed the most nearly "universal" of the readers out there.

I am still stuck on decision, mostly due to the high cost of the Kindle, the new Google competitor and others I have been "previewing." Most of the others are convenient due to small size, but that only exacerbates the problems of reading, IMO.

I have cooled down a great deal, finding that a "real" book is no less cumbersome to deal with than a Kindle. And, while you may load the entire New York Public Library into your Kindle ( :chin: ), you can still only read one book at a time.

I may never get any farther along with this.

Care to offer up some details there, Carl? Hardware? Boot structure? :)

I was running XP Pro as a virtualized "guest" OS on a Intel processor MacBook using something called Parallels Desktop. It allows you simultaneously run as many operating systems as you have the RAM (and HD space) for and run apps under the "guest" OS while keeping the primary OS showing. The guest OS is saved as a special disk image on the HD that the virtualization software opens when it's launched. It's a pretty cool trick.

I don't use it anymore, though--the version I have wouldn't run under OS X 10.6.x and since I no longer needed it for work (I ran a Windows-only VPN client) I decided it wasn't worth buying the new version. Now I use BootCamp to dual-boot between OS X and Ubuntu depending on what I want to do. It's not as flexible as Parallels but it has the advantage of being free.

Was going to show the desktop off the Mac, but couldn't figure out how to save a screen capture. Go to "Utilities" folder, find the app "Grab". It will grab anything from a selection to the entire screen. Save the grabbed shot, open in Preview, save again as a JPG file. You're golden.
