Well, I have gone on two rides with a motorcycle club in Denver... great bunch of people, and fun rides. Amusing name "Infidels", the gent who leads most of the rides used to be a member of a club in CA, and missed the group rides. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/motorcyclesocdenver/

We went to the Royal Gorge 8 days ago, yesterday to Cripple Creek. Yea, we got rained on. Oh well! My ugly mug is lower left on the front now. Cripes Man! :wall:  :homer:

A bunch of you who ride also snap photos I presume? I would like to get a neat camera that will do image stabilization for movies, and take good snapshots when riding. You know, easy to use with gloved hands, Everyone else in the group has some sort of cool camera, and one dude had an intriguing helmet cam. Suggestions if you have any.

I usually ride with the bucket, but it had been beastly hot and humid, so I ditched it for a while on some mellow back roads and the group leader was goofing around with his little Canon...

Caught me grinning like an idiot (same grin when skiing)...

The AJS bikes are cool Charles. I like small displacement bikes for the "around town thing". Under 500cc bikes are really cool, and that power to rate ratio proves that physics is fun. I rode that 650cc Suzuki scooter the other day... WOW.

That being said... The ZG1000 Concours rocks. I have put over 2600 miles on it since I got it, and just finished an all day ride up into the Snowy Range in Wyoming and back. The long and twisty ways... over 450 miles with the group today. I need a cool camera. What a beautiful ride!

But for around town... I kinda miss my little Honda CB350. Or the Yammahammer RD400. Seriously.

It's just fun to ride and there is a lot to be said about the agility of smaller displacement bikes. I'm not sure, but I believe the smallest street bike you can find in the US is a 250cc Honda Rebel unless you go with an automatic and now we're talking scooters.
Yamaha makes a Vino in 125cc but the brakes were more of an afterthought. If you like the retro Euro style then it's an OK bike. Honda did make the Big Ruckus until 2006. 250cc automatic and it looked like nothing else out there. It was starting to gain popularity when they pulled the plug and started pushing their other scooter line, hard. The Silverwing and the Helix come to mind. Not really my style but to each their own.

Well I see they dropped the Helix for something called the SH150i.

We're looking at Connie-14s and possibly a pair of ZX14s for the twisty stuff. Our garage is currently filled with cruisers - and we're missing out on a lot of riding due to threat of rain. Cleaning a blinged-out Valkyrie I/S is a friggin' chore... :-|

Would love a 14...but I have enough points on my license already with the 1000... :geek: As for riding in the rain.... Like I tell Mrs. Bunneh. If I was afraid of rain...I would ride a Harley and cower in pheer under an overpass....

That and I run Avon's....So unless its a torrential downpour (in which case I slowdown to about 40 and turn on the hazards)... I follow my mantra...

RIDE BUNNEH...RIDE!

One guy had to walk his bike thru his entire house until it started...He said it was a bitch getting it up the stairs...It started in the Master Bedroom. His wife had forgotten where she hid the spare KIPASS fob!

Some people put the fob in the secret pocket in the mesh jacket or sew a small karabiner in the pocket to clip it on too. Other than that...they love the ride! The MPG is a bit less. I get about 45mpg (would probably get better if I kept it under 90 and didnt run Saphira like a wild animal) but they are seeing about 35mpg or so. That and this years Maroon color is awsome!

I'm looking at some electronics for ours:

FTM-10SR;
JMCB2003;
Zumo 550
Kennedy FRSet4 to tie it all together.

We can currently operate 11M, 6M, 2M, 220 and 440 MHz...FRS/GMRS...from our Valkyries courtesy of the bike's OEM audio system (in the case of my I/S) and the JMCB ('DSG's Tourer) and the Kennedy Integrator unit along with a VX6R or VX7R - and a pair of Midland 910GXT FRS units.

The HT setup is nice, but the FTM-10 unit will add FM stereo reception to the Connies and give us a bit more power out...at the expense of 6M and 220 MHz. I really wish someone would come out with a waterproof quad-bander that covers ALL the VHF/UHF bands.

Yea, but a cool story about 3 people who rode together, one of them happened to be a cat.

I knew a runt Malamute by the name of Kudo that rode on a Honda V65 Sabre tank... with doggy stirrups and goggles. She was a scream, and one hell of a Frisbee pooch.

I checked on insurance for a new ZX14. Full coverage; sky-high maximums, the works...only adds $500/yr to my existing premiums. If I were to reduce the full-coverage maximums so as to be in line with those which my touring bikes enjoy, the yearly fee drops to 2/3 of that.

For someone like you or I, being mature, experienced riders, we don't warrant insurance premiums that are in the F2 layer.
But, a 18, 19, 20 year old rider....if he/she can get any insurance above liability, the premiums can EASILY be double, triple or even quadruple what you or I pay, or even those multiples of the note on the bike if they have as much as one ticket.

Yes, I have a capable, fast motorcycle. But...with all it taking is a trooper's punching in the tag number of it in his in-car computer, BINGO!!!! The trooper now knows I have a CDL...and is instantly looking for an excuse. My MVR is spotless. 'Nuff said.

Bwhahahaha...you should have seen the quote I got when checking into a new bike. I pay less for full coverage on two cars! And I have a spotless driving record. Insurance payments should not exceed the payments of the bike.... :wall:

The screwed up thing is that my grandpa pays 13$ a month for full coverage on his bike. That is BS. Guess who would be the primary on my bike at that point? :snicker: The funny thing is that his insurance covers any licensed rider...hum..my car insurance covers me and anyone over 25. Weird.

Ask about the exhaust specs. Not the emissions but how it works. Most dealers don't know it's a two stage for low and high RPMs.

Oh, that caught my eye. As does the power to weight ratio, the really low CG, and it looks really cool. Maybe a used one in a few years, I am too lower middle class, and I just don't want to make payments on vehicles anymore.

I really like the Pacific Coast... was looking for one this summer.

Considered an ST-1100, but it felt piggy to me on hairpin turns. The '99 Connie was an excellent decision. 3200 miles ridden already.

This new bike is different, but they need to make something similar; simpler and cheaper.

Let's fight about it.

One of my coworkers can relate. He rides a '77 FX and is into medieval reenactments - stickfights and whatnot.

The Pacific Coast...is another motorcycle concept with which Honda absolutely dropped the damned ball. Everyone I know who owns one won't part with the machine.

The ST 1100 is OK, but it's kinda boring... and the Pacific Coast is similar.

So "discovering" the Concours is fantastic, I never really considered the model. She Bop! :snicker:

But the Pacific Coast seems better for in town, I still want one. It just screams for customization.

We went on a ride through Mohican State Park (Loudonville, OH and surrounding areas) today. Met up with a bunch of friends from the Ohio state chapter of our national touring club...had lunch then hit the back roads.

Was a mite chilly towards the end. Rode my full-dresser and managed to get the rear end sideways under throttle a couple times when riding through the park.

I was on the fence at the beginning of the ride...literally. Am picted discussing the '00 and up Ultra Classics with the owner of one who showed up for our ride. 'DSG's bike is in the immediate foreground and her 2/220/440 Diamond can be seen at the right of the trunk. She's checking out the Ultra:

Dale's been nibbling at the hook regarding ham radio. A lot of us were using onboard CB rigs for ride coordination and "Skip Land" was rolling...folks were becoming frustrated...and Nicki was championing the concept of "nice, quiet communications". Of course, volunteering to help the folks set their bikes up with ham gear after they obtain a license doesn't hurt either.

Was a mite chilly towards the end. Rode my full-dresser and managed to get the rear end sideways under throttle a couple times when riding through the park.

Heavy metal Bebop!

The Dunlops on the Concours get a little stiff and slidey when it gets cold. Woke me up a couple of times, as I have gotten used to the bike, and am willing to dive into a turn. I have put a little over 3K on it since I got in in July.

It was controllable, but I was surprised... in the recent past I had been using Cheng Shin Barracuda tires and they did not change as much. Very grippy, still decent at about 20-25 degrees. This bike does weigh more but the HP is about the same.

As a cold weather rider, I hope to find a better tire.

This wasn't cold as much as "wet" and lots of engine power. I have been able to do same on a 90-degree day; "damp" pavement.

A bit of history:

Honda used the GL1500 Gold Wing engine as the powerplant for the Valkyrie. Instead of two carbs (max low-end torque), the bike received six (max md and upper-end HP). The engine also received a set of solid - rather than hydraulic - lifters, more aggressive cam timing....and in the case of the 'Interstate' (I/S) model, an ignition timing curve with 5 degrees more advance from 1700 - ~4500RPM.

If one dynoes a stock Valkyrie, one sees the power curve begin to come on at roughly 2000 RPM (~20) and peak at around 6000 (> 100). Nice for some, but there are those horsepower junkies among us who want more...

First stop on a non-I/S model was an ignition module swap; they're pin-for-pin compatible.

But what for the I/S? It already comes with the more desirable timing module... :chin:

Many of us were getting irritated that the stock Keihin N424-series slow jets (#35) continually fouled with gas condensates, owing to the very small diameter of the jet. So...we investigated the use of a #38, along with an adjustment of the pilot air screws.

The low-end power of my Interstate (and probably any of that model which are thusly equipped and tuned properly) is now ~80 RWHP at a point slightly above 2K RPM. Torque is approaching 100 ft/lb at that engine speed, and it's enough to send the rear E3 into a spin unless the bike is ridden straight up and down...on dry pavement. No more 'lean spot' at highway RPMs. Power is there, everywhere.

Fuel mileage suffered a bit but not by much. 2-up performance - though never sluggish - is now what a bike of this engine size should be.

I've done similar tricks and more (adjustable jet needles, different rising-rate carb springs, etc) to my other Valkyries and they're all a lot more fun to ride in modified form than in stock.

Average neighborhood. Ain't no coffee and cigar shops in da hood yo!

Off the top of my head - drill the fasteners for safety wire and wire 'em to an anchor plate/washer setup like the racers do.

The average "moran" isn't going to be carrying around a pair of diagonal cutters or safety-wire pliers. I would also look into a Bulldog or similar cycle alarm which is vibration activated.

Funny thing about 'da hood: Most of the coffee shops I visit within inner-city Akron are in fact located "there", and no one messes with anyone's bike.

While waiting, a salesman and I played with numbers for a C14 and a couple of others with a trade in, because you can get stimulus money. He was convince that it's a great deal, and was all set to prove it to me.

I showed them that I had to report it as income, and they went ... HUH? I said no thanks, I'd rather pay cash for my motorcycles, no loans.

But that cranberry colored C14 was Sweeeeeeeeet! :agree:

One guy at work bought three vehicles, and just starting doing his taxes. He's pissed now, he thought it was "free money". It is, because it's "free" and can't get the value pinned down. Where's the value in stimulus money?

Just put my '00 Valkyrie Interstate back on the road today - been prepping it for the past week or so. Not too long of a ride; just enough to burn the storage oil out of the cylinders and make sure everything works correctly.

Feels darn good to be back in the saddle. Will ride to work tomorrow and Friday, and out to an area shop on Saturday to get supplies for spring-prepping my Tourer. (Midwest Motorsports - located 10 minutes from where I work - closed shop over the winter. Thus, no more quick trips over lunchtime for oil and filters.)

Bump.

Out with the old; in with the new(er).

Wednesday should find one of these sitting in my garage:

http://www.usway-road.com/images/2008_kaw_concours_side.jpg

I've been making a list...checking it twice. Tires and new brake pads will commence the start of the "farkling" but it isn't going to end there - not by a long shot. J&M CB2003, Yaesu FTM-10SR and a Zumo 550 will be added. I was going to make my own mount for the antennas but happened across this saddlebag protector unit from MC Enterprises:

http://www.mcenterprisesusa.com/garage/police/kawcon4.jpg

The "Law Enforcement" version has an antenna mount built in and can be ordered powdercoated matte black:

http://www.mcenterprisesusa.com/garage/police/kawcon7.jpg

I'll do a full writeup of the radio installation project in the site's technical forum area. A Comet duplexer will be used to couple CB and VHF/UHF signals to the antenna. I'm planning on using an Opek HVT-100. May have to do a little fiddling with the mounts to get the top case to fit but that's half the fun...

So, how's it ride compared to the old school Connie?
Biggest buzz I heard is less vibration, much improved front end.
Having never ridden a ZG1000, I cannot accurately compare the two. But I have had a -14 to speeds and in cornering regimes where I could easily unset the front end when under compression loading. That can be fixed by a re-springing. I'm going to put some capable skins on mine then pull the bags and run the same course for a comparo. If it sticks sans bags...I'll not get nutso when running with them. If not - on the phone to Progressive Suspension and Race Tech for a pair of Gold Emulators.

Of course it's faster too. :yes:That goes without saying. Lookee what I got h'yar, boys:

That's 260RWHP at 8psi boost and on 93 octane pump gas, folks.

If I do ride again, I'll want more comfort for the right hand, probably forever. :irked:The C-14 will do it, albeit fitted with Helibars risers or Convertibars handlebars.

I did a couple hundred miles on the Connie 14 yesterday. This after installing bar risers, peg lowering kit and other ergo amenities.

Bike still needs a decent seat, but at least the cockpit is bearable from a "room" standpoint now.

Saturday was spent designing and mocking up an antenna mount/helmet lock/trunk mounting plate spacer assembly and a handlebar mounting bracket for my FTM-10SR. As soon as I get the finished pieces back from the fabricators, they're off to the powdercoat people for an application of matte black.

Nice.
The lines coincide with the reflections, duh. I know. Try the camera again without the reflection from the sun. If regular reflections don't mess with it then check all your settings, etc.
If none of that helps then maybe it is no longer useful for the conditions under which you used it. BTW, never leave those things in a hot car.

Bump.

Tuesday morning - 6AM ride to work.

Ambient temperature 23-25 degrees.

Wind speed 85MPH.

Go plug those figures into your wind-chill calculator and tell me what you come up with.

Today I bought these:

3529

3530

I wired a Gerbing controller into the bike's electrical system this past week:

http://gerbing.com/images/productImages/TempCont/temp_7.jpg

A flex cable is on order:

http://gerbing.com/images/access_6.jpg

I'm good to around 10 degrees F with this setup. What really helps out is the California Scientific +7.5" windshield and Baker Hand Wings which I added to the bike a few weeks back; the bike is now almost too warm in 70+ degree temps.

If I find myself out quite often in weather that's colder than 10F I'll pick up some heated pants:

3531

Still have to get the FTM-10SR and a J&M CB wired into the bike. That'll come next year; I have to pull the tank again and run power/coax leads. Ditto with driving lights. I'm weighing Clear Water Systems' "Glenda" setup against Twisted Throttle's "Denali". Both are LED, bright as he!! and only draw 2A per pair. Both are ~7oz apiece.

My last oil change: $8.49/qt x3 (Mobil 1 m/c full synthetic 10W40) and 8.97 for the oil filter (Fram). All obtained at Walmart. And maybe 30 cents worth of K&N filter oil when I washed the air filter. I would have spent about $1 more if I would have gone to AutoZone or O'Rielly's for the oil and filter.

At the bike shop: $14.99/qt and $24.99 for the filter. (Suzuki branded...and the oil is mineral, NOT synthetic)

I changed the Connie's oil in late July - went with Amsoil full synthetic. May switch to MX4T or Rotella Synthetic next time. We're paying around $9/qt for the Mobil product and a little less for the Shell.

Put a set of these on the bike Friday:

3554

http://www.clearwaterlights.com/downloads/Kawasaki%20Concours1400%20v4.1%202.pdf

Very low current draw (1A per light at full intensity) and they can be dimmed using a bar-mounted controller.

Yes, Kevin, Clearwater makes a set for your V-Strom. In fact, their lights are the hot ticket for any bike with a lower-output alternator. You get light but not a dead battery and/or a cooked stator.

The C-14's headlights don't track with the forks. The Glendas do, and give you the advantage of floodlighting roadside ditches. Just the thing for spotting those darned antlered forest rats which are very active this time of year.

An interesting Hawaii-ism. Early on in the 20th century, they recognized they had a problem with rats from merchant and Navy ships. They were being overrun by them. Someone got the bright idea to import the mighty mongoose to deal with the rats. One fly in the ointment...rats are primarily nocturnal, the mongoose is diurnal. The rats won.

I ran an XJ750 Maxim for years. Put 63K on it after buying it with 44K on the odometer.
Never did much to it but change the oil and tires. Yea, it had a damn square headlight.

And here's the news story to the above video.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2438620/Shocking-video-Range-Rover-crashing-bikers-surround-vehicle-annual-street-ride.html

This bike club claims to be a clean Christian group but I didn't see it here. They had the Rover's tags and description but they also decided to ride within 6" on his door and then brake check him. They probably scared the shit out of the driver and made him think his life was in danger. In that case, he probably thought they would all gang up and it looked like they were trying to. News reports says that in the first stop, they started damaging his vehicle. We still don't know what went down before the video started.

What a bunch of morons.

The idiot that looked like he was taunting the Rover to run him over apparently got his wish. Others have said that they were trying to slow down the Rover to let the group get around him. Either way, total horseshit. They had other lanes to use and could have simply gone around him without the drama. Instead, they decided to act like a pack of hungry animals in the wild. Any exposed person on a motorcycle is not a roadblock.

There are many ways to handle things on a ride. THIS was not one of them.

How many do you want?

Get thee to either the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event (every July; Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course) or the the Barber Motorsports Museum's version of such - held in September.

You'll likely find one or pieces thereof in every aisle, along with the venerable XS650...which gets my vote for anyone looking for a dependable, easy to ride vertical twin.

Unfortunately, once I saw/heard a BMW R60 in person, nothing else grabs me quite the same :quiet::twisted:

Used to have an R60. This one isn't mine, but it looks pretty much identical.

I recall the handlebars on mine being a little bit higher, but that could just be faulty memory.

US-market ones had the high bars. I think the low Euro bars look better, especially with the bar-end turn signals :cool2:

An Ariel Square Four has that effect on me, as does a Z1R-TC.

Our Mom's best friend's husband died in a motorcycle accident.

So for my brother (W9JDG) and I, that option was off the table.

That would be like me saying, "I had some friends die in auto accidents so that option is off the table for me."

I have no clue where you're trying to go with that but don't get me started on screwed up upbringings.

I'm not going anywhere with it except to say that if you don't understand that logic then you must have come from a family that looked at things with a level head. You have no idea how many times I heard, "Someone I knew was killed in a car accident so you can't go visit your friends." I lived miles outside the city. All I could do was bide my time and wait until I could move out. Not fun.

Maybe you did hear that. I certainly did. Something happens to some kid in Iowa, this kid in SC can't go see a basketball game with his friends.
Now to address the other statement. I have heard people all the time say things like, so&so bike accident. Selling my bike.
So I ask again. How many people stop driving cars because someone they know is injured or killed in an accident?

Sorry I tweaked your nipples and caused you to revisit a painful childhood. Wasn't my intention. I relive mine everyday, only the bad parts. Go figure.
