So it looks like there's an attempt to form another National Amateur Radio organization, as a counterpoint to the ARRL. Will they succeed? Odds are not in their favor, but we'll see.

The group is called the National Amateur Radio Alliance, and their website is https://www.amateurradioalliance.org/ .

Free membership through June is currently being offered, and clearly they're still organizing things.

But already they've gotten a "Cease & Desist" type letter from ARRL. They object to the use by NARA of the phrase "A National Association For Amateur Radio Operators", on the grounds that "The National Association for Amateur Radio" is phrase trademarked by the ARRL. [ I'm not enough of a legal scholar to know if the wording is different enough to pass muster. ]

The letter can be found at https://www.amateurradioalliance.org/downloads/ARRL_Letter.pdf

This might be interesting. We shall see.

Could this be yet another example of amateur radio defeats amateur radio?

yeah. they're kinda clowny. they've worked hard to choose nomenclature that mimics ARRL and yet they get all indignant when the ARRL sends them a cease and desist.

the ARRL has its moments but these guys are goofy.

(oh ... their primary interface to the world is via facebook!)

My gut hunch is that this will whither and die on the vine. Oh, I'm sure they'll attract a lot of attention, at first. There will be many unhappy current, former, and never members of the League who will show interest. But I just don't see how they can pull all this together.

In short, they mean well, but they haven't thought this through.

Like I said, we shall see.

Of course the ARRL wants to protect their money honey pot. IMHO, I hope NARA succeeds There is no love between me and the ARRL. Maybe NARA should change their name to NAARA, North American Amateur Radio Association?

I would have suggested North American Transmitters Organization, but I think that the acronym is taken.

Hmm. North American Frequent Transmission Association? Nah.

Wireless Institute of America? I think our friends down under wouldn't care for that one.

Mobile American Groundwave Association? I'm sorry, I had to, even if it is a bit of a stretch. Would you prefer Make Amateurs Groundwave Again?
