OK, this is a regional one, and I get it, not being a native but having lived here for... OMG, 40 years, who'd'a thought...

The local news, all three major TV stations and all the major radio stations, are incensed...

The medical TV drama "The Pit" is set at a fictional hospital in Pittsburgh.

The supposedly native ("yinzer") doctor character mentions having gotten a fish sandwich at... Wholey's. A real location in the Strip District and their fish, steaks, and other items are excellent, BTW.

The problem...

Well, how did YOU pronounce the name, the first time you saw it (be honest!)? If you said it like "Holey's", you ain't a yinzer. It's pronounced "Wooley's", like what you shave off of sheep.

You'd think a TV show would try to get it right, as they're pretending these characters are locals, even with their accents. Especially the show-runner and the people who created the danged thing. But no, they've been exposed as frauds. And the local audience is unforgiving. Well, except the staff at Wholey's, they've offered a free fish sandwich (and a T Shirt of Pittsburgh-ese) to anyone from the show who stops in. And apologizes.

In the immortal words of the late, great, Myron Cope... Yoy! And Double Yoy!

I think this sort of detail is what makes it fiction.

It also makes memorable. they had to go to no effort at all to get you to talk about it! :)

People on TV mispronounce San Diego place names all the time, La Jolla and San Ysidro in particular. Luckily for them, Jamacha does not make the news frequently.

The native people and place names in this region get similar treatment from noobs and out yonderers too.

Fiction? FICTION??? You think I'd make up a story like that?

Think again, Jr. Woodchuck

The fact that they actors who portray native Yinzers mispronounced it IS the point
