The nightmare that was AOL has been bought by Verizon, and all Verizon email has been off loaded to AOL. Now it's full of pop-up adds and crap that just makes the whole experience horrible.

1989 to 1991. Two friends had it. First friend was playing chess with a guy in Russia for 1 dollar a minute. He'd make a move, shut it off, then check back the next day and make another move.
Other friend played fantasy league sports, just like they do today. Left the connection on overnight one time. The bill wasn't pretty.

I never had Compuserve. I re member them early on as a large commercial BBS more so than an ISP. There were also a lot of free dial-in BBS's in those days. Remember X,Y and Z modem ? Remember the "kermit" protocol on Linux ? I did have AOL for a short while and soon after switched over to a small local dialup ISP.
