View Full Version : So Calvin!
Tell me that Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, didn't have a hand in this Bloom County 2016 strip:

Ok. He didn't have a hand in the strip.
Berkeley Breathed may have "borrowed" the idea of the big monster from C&H, I will grant you that. Back in the day, as you may recall, he was often accused of improperly "borrowing" ideas from Doonesbury and other strips. Gary Trudeau for one often was unhappy about just that.
But the actions of the characters themselves? Cutter John pretty much disappeared for after a short time, but during his time in the strip, there was quite a bit of use of him and his wheelchair, interacting with the other characters, fan-fantasizing in Star Trek or whatever. (If memory serves, Cutter John was one of the characters he brought over from his college-days strip, Academia Waltz)
No, I'm strictly talking about the artwork. Pay particular attention to the hands (paws?) of the monster—that's absolutely Watterson's style.

Hmmm. Maybe. But it could be his influence, not his actual handiwork. Watterson isn't Trudeau, so I will grant you that's possible.
Oh, can certainly wish for a new C&H strip. I understood why he ended it as he did when he did, but I can't believe that we'll never see Calvin and his imagination ever again. Or should I say Spaceman Spiff?
As I recall, Breathed and Watterson have collaborated on strips before but, you're right, it could just be a tribute of sorts. C&H was the best comic strip ever, after all.

Better than The Far Side?
(Of course, it's not entirely fair to compare a one panel to a three/four panel strip. With a 3/4 panel strip, you have time to set up the gag. With a 1 panel, you've got to hit the target in one shot)
IMHO, yes, better than The Far Side.

Hobbs County. A Blooming Calvin Conspiracy.
I like the grassy knoll upon which thoughts and dreams came to flourish and eventually meet an untimely death.
