The BBC used one of these in a children's TV comedy, it was ridden by a Mad Professor (of course).

One of the 'Men In Black' franchises had a scene where the characters rode similar contrivances, except this one is real and not CGI. Kewl!

I wonder where he got that tire.

On a regular two wheel bike I would always get a mud streak up my back (bobbed fenders were cewl). With that motorcycle and no fenders, I would guess a mud stripe the whole way around.

Another question: How does the thing steer? Hugh, is there a site that gives more info on it?

And no cup holder for your beer.

Hah, it was invented by an Italian. Figures...

Looking at the linkage from the steering wheel, it appears that what happens is when the wheel is turned, it moves the rider in or out of the center of the big wheel causing his weight shift to steer the device.

Of course, I could be full of shit, too.

This might the one time you aren't. It's either how you describe or turning the steering wheel causes the bit wheel to tilt, accomplishing the same thing.

Here's what I suppose is a later version of the thing. It's certainly more refined:

One cannot fail while wearing Argyle socks. Everybody knows that.

More on monowheels here (http://www.impactlab.net/2006/11/27/history-of-the-worlds-craziest-invention-the-monowheel-with-amazing-pics/). There have been quite a number of them built over the years, some human powered.

Hah. From horses to Harleys. a natural progression, of course.

I looked very closely at the third one, used a shit-ton of magnification, and on the side of the wheel frame, it said one horse power. I tend to believe that.

Those are dreamy but have you seen this one?

And it goes well with Winter weather Argyle.

The photo was a machine exhibited in Dusseldorf, presumably German. I've edited the program so as to leave just the motorcycling bits and uploaded it to Vid.me. I just have to enable sharing, it's now about 30Mb.

It does look as though the rider attempts to remain upright whilst tilting the machine in the required direction. Apparently it was difficult to turn anything like sharply and much use was made of thick-soled boots. The program includes actor and comedy writer Steve Pemberton riding the monowheel persued by comedian and actor Harry Hill on a penny-farthing bicycle, another tricky feat.

The upload doesn't seem to show much, I'm not familiar with vid.me.
