I remember watching that on the TV. We were all late to school that day because of it. Truly a great man. RIP

A true American hero. He flew his private plane until he was 90, quite an amazing man.

All the hours we spent as kids acting like we were him. What a great time we grew up in. A part of the universe has gone dark, Godspeed indeed.

I hate to be a "Debbie Downer" but does anybody remember how he was portrayed in "The Right Stuff", that he lobbied against women in space, that he was part of the Keating Five and that he lobbied NASA for years to let him go up in the Shuttle. NASA finally had to let him go for fear of budget cuts.

Glenn was not perfect by any means, but what Tom Wolfe wrote about him in The Right Stuff was somewhat exaggerated. His career in the Senate showed him to be quite a reasonable man.

BTW, you should do some research. Wolfe himself is kind of an asshole.

“I guess the question I'm asked the most often is: "When you were sitting in that capsule listening to the count-down, how did you feel?" Well, the answer to that one is easy. I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of two million parts -- all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.” ― John Glenn (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/83787.John_Glenn)
