View Full Version : Today In Communications History
"On October 24, 1861, the communications company Western Union finished work on the first transcontinental telegraph line in the United States. For the first time, nearly instant communication was possible across the country, far outpacing the Pony Express which took 10 days to get letters from Missouri to California.
20 years before, it had taken 110 days to get new of President Harrison's death to people in Los Angeles.
More than just a cultural breakthrough, the first transcontinental telegraphy line was an immense feat of engineering."

And many of us would have done that dirty job. Because!
For the good of our nation...

Though it disrupted other jobs...

It certainly did not have to be an office job...

And, I imagine the first message was either a political ad or an ad for a new Yugo.

No, it came from a Nigerian prince.
Just FYI, the cost of sending a message on that first line was $1/word. According to this site (http://www.davemanuel.com/inflation-calculator.php), $1 in 1861 would be equivalent to $27.03 in 2016 dollars.

If social media was around, I wonder what the rant of the day or week would have been with regard to the new technology.

Golden "Boy" seems sexually ambiguous to me. Just like so many of the "ancient gods". Just sayin'.
