I just won an ebay auction for an authentic early 1920's pencil sharpener. When it gets here I'm going to mount it on my wooden book case. From now on I'll be sharpening my pencils in style. I'll post some pictures when it gets here.

Whenever I think about pencil sharpeners, I remember the delinquent kid who sat at the desk behind me during high school English class. At some point, he had been entrusted with the simple task of holding a key chain for the gym teacher. This key chain happened to also have the master key to the student lockers. Spotting the opportunity, the kid secretly made a quick clay impression of the master locker key and then meticulously recreated an unauthorized copy once he got home. (For some unknown reason, he always had a ball of clay in his pocket.)

Each day, during lunch break, the kid would habitually break into a few student lockers and steal all of their pencils -- only pencils. Later, he would arrive in our English class with his roll of newly stolen pencils.

The kid didn't like our "zero personality" English teacher. Our classroom had a pencil sharpener in the corner, mounted to a wooden bookcase. So to disturb the teacher and disrupt class, the kid would frequently get up and needlessly over-sharpen each of his pencils. By the time class had concluded, his pencils would all have been reduced to useless stubs. The next day, he would arrive with more stolen pencils to repeat the process.

BTW, Happy Natal Anniversary.

Thank you.

As far as the present to myself In a way yes. On birthdays and holidays I usually treat myself to a present. In addition to the pencil sharpener I may also treat myself to a new smartphone. My oldGalaxyS4 still works fine but its pretty beat up . Time for a new phone. Next time maybe a new violin bow. I generally treat myself to something I don't absolutely need but have wanted for a year or more.

To avoid an expensive product recall, they wanted to rebrand the S7 as the Samsung "Hotline". But, Ericsson already had dibs on the name.

Congratulations on your pencil tool.
Thanks you. It just arrived here to day. Very nice, all cast iron except for the part that collects the shavings. Definitely I can envision this in a very old turn of the century school or office.

Yeah, I sometimes sharpen this way if I am in a place where there is no available sharpener.

Not to put a fine point on it, but your illustration is rather blunt.

I see you still remember me from school. This sounds like some crazy kind of thing that I would have done when I was in high school. I was known for doing stupid stuff like that. I remember the time I went around loosening the screws on classroom doorknobs so they would fall off when someone tries to open them. Typical of my practical jokes.

And yes, I did say ...knobs.

You should add a good old fashioned typewriter, I have over 50 in my collection.

That's the best option, although it won't fit under my seats or on the roof rack very well :-p

Driving through the forest on Chappy on miles of one-way "roads" made me realize how much it would suck to come across a downed tree.

Yeah. We know what a great weapon those things make.
