OK, got this whizbang new Dell and of course it came with Windoze 10 pre-installed. Thought I found all the appropriate things to turn off and say no to, but wonder if any of you know where I could find a comprehensive list of how to keep this latest version in its cage? So far it seems fine, but what I know of an OS could fit on the small diameter of your dipole. I barely have cut & paste down. Seriously! I know most of you are virtual maestros at this sort of thing. Suggestions?

Don't think that you will be able to. Microsoft will spy on you, especially now that you don't own the software.

I suspect Windows 10 will increasingly become more problematic and network clogging.

I say this as I am loading Linux CentOS, preparing for the future...

Several proggies out there.
Use google
Disablewintracking
Spybot anti beacon

Run through all settings and put everything in privacy off if not needed.

Cortana will be enabled with the latest big update and the off switch removed, i changed the register to put it off permanently.
Microphne off, camera off ( laptop).

Removed the apps i don't use, be carefull here...

Using that you will have killed off most of the call home stuff.

Phone rings. Just in time to interrupt the closing scenes of Balance of Terror (BBC America has been running Star Trek (The Original Series) Seasons 1 & 2 all weekend, interspersed with STARZ running Star Wars: The Force Awakens all weekend).

Well, well what do you know? It's my friends at Windows Technical Support. "Hello! Can you guess why I'm calling?"

Told him I'm a Systems Administrator, Database Administrator, and Help Desk Analyst, so yes, I knew. (Usually they hang up at this point). So he asks me if I'm near the computer.

"Which one? I need it's IP Address. Since the computer is reporting back to you, your technical readout should have the computer's TCP/IP address and MAC address. So what's the IP Address?" (If they get this far, they usually hang up here)

"Just a moment... The IP Address is 110.74.38.468". (That is not a typo)

"Gee, that's funny. Standard IP version 4 addresses don't have any octet so larger that 255. So how can it be 468?"

"It's because your Windows computer is malfunctioning and infected with a virus!"

Nice try.

Told him at that point to quit bothering me and go eat a cow. Besides, The City On the Edge of Forever just started, and I'm always a sucker for Harlan Ellison's early work.

I get those calls from time to time. Once, I quite enthusiastically said “Sanjay! Is that you?” He replied “Who is this??”, then hung up.

That was weird. Was he trying to sell something? WTF was that all about? Trolling for personal data, probably.

Yeah, I wouldn't let him get in the way of classic Trek either. Good call

Thanks for the good ideas & input. Looks like I did all I could already and that I'm basically porked on privacy in the long run. Ya gotta love it.......

Big update for WinX happened here yesterday. It's almost like a whole new computer. This particular update took 6 hours. The first couple of hours I was like, WTF?
I did do a reset on this machine a couple of weeks ago but I've never seen it this fast and it also seemed to address some issues with FF hanging up for brief periods when on FB.

Big update to MacOS Sierra (Apple is no longer calling it OS X) due on the 20th of this month. Among other things, I'll be able to use Siri voice commands on my computer. Woo-hoo! “Siri, scratch my nuts…”

I'm mobile, and not at home. Pay no attention to the Windows haters and conspiracy theorists.

Yes, Windows 10 has more "telemetry" than previous MS OS's.

Defaults are about the same as the Mac OS with Siri.
Jim in DE has a great link to an app that kills the shit.

Once you do that, you are pretty damn anonymous.
Some will tell you otherwise, using a hockey stick.
Or a graph, or some other paranoid fantasy.

Honestly, I like the OS a lot. Not a fan-boi.
Pragmatist. Even run Windows 10 Phone.

Jim, give the link out for "protection" again.
Or I will later, just for "lafs". ;)

I don't know the name. I searched for updates since I was updating the XYL's Win8.1 machine for the last 8 days.
This is on my main laptop and for wha it's worth, she's a screamah now.

The app in question is SpyBot Anti-Beacon (https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/). So there ya go.

Windows 10 is pretty darn nice. Yea, some things got moved around.

Under the hood is better. Most older hardware has drivers.
About the only thing that can be a hassle is older webcams.

Well defecate. I was under the impression that 10 was just south of the devils sack. Maybe I'm wrong. I do have to admit that this IS way faster than the XP platform I was used to. Which I would certainly friggin hope so, being the latest whiz bang stuff. I suppose since I really don't have anything much to hide, I shouldn't be worried. Having said that I will check out the aformentioned linkie above. Neener!

New lappy, I7 processor, 12 Gb mem, SSHD does fine, though Windoze 7 on the old dual core 2 GHz intel processor wasn't bad either with 4 Gb mem.

It can also be used as an adjective to modify or describe a noun.

It's the only word that I know that can be used as a noun, verb and, an adjective; also, it can be used as an "Exclamation", not needing a noun or verb to express an idea.

I hate Windows 10. Chrome is unstable on it and for some reason Firefox randomly stops loading web pages until I reboot. Then there are the updates you schedule sometime in the middle of the night, but for some reason the prompts to install the updates appear in the middle of the day. Quite often I'm taking a break from the computer when the prompt to delay the reboot pops up and Windows 10 automatically restarts, dumping everything I have open in the process. I understand the need for updates and security patches, but given the frequency of the updates this whole update thing becomes a pain in the ass for people who actually use their computers for something other than looking at Facebook and porn. Yes, I know about auto save. However, some software manufacturers haven't bothered to add auto save as a feature.

Sorry it's not working for you. My experience is very different. But, as an MS-Geek from way back, I expected some difficulties and did some research. For me, it's been even better than Windows 7, and pretty damn stable. The bad mouthing and nasty attitude to MS has caused a lot of lies and misinformation to obscure the truth..

Such is the world we live in. Meh.

No, M$ brought did it to themselves. One of the major complaints with Windows 8 was the tiles. A significant amount of people were happy with the simple hierarchy structure of the menus in previous versions of Windows. There is no way they could have misunderstood what people were complaining about. What did they do? They brought back the start menu with tiles and no directory type hierarchy unless you rebuild the start menu from scratch, which I can do by making folders, pinning them to the start menu, then adding shortcuts to everything within the folders. However, some people have told me this doesn't work for them. It is simply easier to download Classic Shell and it is done for you. Microsoft could have added the option for a classic mode or theme like they did in the past, but they seem to be hell-bent on making everything look the same across desktops, tablets, smartphones, and other devices that can run Windows.

And while most of us can figure this how to adapt to the changes, we have to deal with supporting relatives who buy new laptops and discover that everything has changed. We get the tech support calls for all this. Often times this occurs before we have Windows 10. I'll also add that if you are working in IT/desktop support, half the staff where you work is also asking you questions about how Windows 10 works after they have purchased a home computer. It got to the point where I told people I don't have anything with Windows 8/10 at home, or, and I haven't touched a computer running it.

I guess a better summary would be that people expect some consistency. The menus in previous versions of Windows were actually very well organized. People were accustomed to that, they liked it, and that is what they expected. You can now type in the name of whatever you want in the start menu and it pops up. That is a good feature. But it doesn't always work if you can't remember the exact name of an administrative tool. And now Microsoft throws in all their Bing search results from the internet. Another one of my complaints with Microsoft is that I disabled those Bing search results. Microsoft re-enabled it with the anniversary update and took away the option to disable it. So far none of the registry hacks to disable have worked. Microsoft has also allowed OEMs to lock you into specific driver versions which prevents users from updating drivers, and the same will be done with bloatware that comes with new computers as well. Buying a retail version of Windows to replace the OEM version that comes with our computer isn't going to save you either, as this will be done from the BIOS.

So, when you buy a new computer with Windows it will be an advertising platform for Micro$oft. I suppose the other option is to buy a model aimed toward businesses that don't have Windows Home editions installed on them, or install Linux if Microsoft doesn't make some agreement with the computer manufacturers to lock-down computers so only Windows can be installed on them, which they may be working on.

Here is a few interesting reads concerning Windows 10 Enterprise version, a way to change your Windows 10 to an unactivated Enterprise variant, which is said to run anyways with a watermark, and features that Windows 10 Enterprise has that the others do not, one being to select the Long Branch which holds off the frequent updates and eliminates Cortana.

I find the enterprise MS changes very interesting.
Yes, it is a bit messy. Networked OS's are nutty.

Apollo Domain was a hot mess, even after HP took it over.
Eventually, it got straightened out, way back when.
