How the hell do you set up virtual COM ports on a Win 8 laptop?

My friend W3WH bought a SignalLink USB at Dayton. He's trying to hook it up as per the directions. So far, so good.

He's using N3FJP software. The app is looking for input from the SignalLink on a COM port.

So I should be able to "tell" the laptop to use report the USB as a COM port for the software. I know we used to do this under XP! But I can't seem to find how to set this.

I would think it should be done under the Driver settings for the SignalLink. And yes, it's running the right drivers.

Neither the SignalLink nor the FJP documentation (that I've seen) covers this.

So what am I missing?

you mean the right, signed-by-the-developer drivers (win8 needs this, no?)

And the answer is... Fuggedaboudit!

Bill wanted to use the SignaLink as the CW interface with N3FJP's ACLog. Turns out, you can't. That's direct from Scott N3FJP -- I asked him.

Now, Bill can use ACLog to key the rig. He just has to buy or build the interface, directions towards either are on the N3FJP website.

But he can still use the SignaLink for digital modes. Just not for CW.

So it goes.
