View Full Version : And, *sigh*, it begins...
Tonight is Light Up Night in downtown Pittsburgh, which is locally the "official" start of the Christmas Holiday season. Yay.
So, as of this morning, my wife's favorite non-sports FM radio station switched from Casual Light Rock to... Christmas Music. 100% Christmas Music, which will be on the air until at least New Year's Day.
Alarm went off at 5:30. By 6:00, I was already bored.
(It wouldn't be so bad, if they would just add some more songs to the playlist. But it's the same 2 or 3 dozen, over and over. And no novelty songs, oh no, that might offend someone. Bob Rivers, where are you when I need you? Let alone Spike Jones, the barking dogs, and Grandma)
If the usual pattern holds, by this time tomorrow, at least 3 other FM music stations in town will have switched to the same thing. (And the same boring playlist, to boot). And, of course, each will proclaim themselves "the official Christmas music station".
*sigh*
At least I have a CD player in the car.
I feel your pain. As we approach that time, my list of stations to listen to in the car gets shorter and shorter. At some point, I just turn the damned thing off. :yuck:
I spent 2 years as the morning-drive DJ & Program Director of an FM country station in the early 1980's. (Back when I was young and foolish, now I'm merely foolish, but I digress). We were told by the station owner to start "phasing in" holiday music starting the week of Thanksgiving... one or two songs an hour, building up to full-blown 100% holiday music the week of Christmas itself. That made a lot of sense, then and now... which is probably why no one does it.
I personally covered the Christmas Eve & Christmas Day morning shifts... let my staff spend time with their families. At the time, I had an LP of a performance of The Nutcracker ballet, so at some point both during the evening & during the morning, I played the entire LP, start to finish (just ran a 30 second promo during the time it took me to flip the album). I heard later that a lot of people appreciated it. (I also heard that the year after I left, there were a lot of complaints when my replacement didn't do the same thing. Not my problem any longer! ) What they didn't realize was... that's when I was taking a few minutes aside to eat my own dinner!

Tom Waits - Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis is the best Christmas song of all time.
Or the worst Valentine's day song, depending on how you look at it...
Bob Rivers, where are you when I need you?
Look no further:

That's a new one.
I was thinking more of "Walking Round in Womens Underwear".

If I were still on the air, I'd be tempted to slip that one into the rotation and see if anyone noticed (after 10 PM, of course. ) Naturally, I'd also have my resume ready...

The only people listening to radio would probably be all over that like flies on, well, yeah.
The people who'd get the humor are all on Spotify :cool2:

But as a former trumpet player, I can't get through the season without at least one volume-at-11 playing of the Messiah. Oxygen depletion be fun, yo!

At least this year Hallmark Channel will return to normal programming very early in January ... not MARCH!
I've seen all the episodes of Frasier but not Cheers. Sometimes I'll tune in late at night while I sit in the dark in my underwear talking to strange men on the radio.

All one needs is to attend my orchestras annual holiday Messiah sing-a-long. No other holiday music needed.

For relief, I suggest holiday tunes by Da Yoopers.

Yes, we have a station like that too. The car radio has been tuned there since the whole Paris incident. I cannot stomach hearing imbeciles yammer about it, so I instead choose to brighten my mood with xmas tunes :)

Radio station KFAT out in California played their anthem "Moose Turd Pie" even during the holidays.

I don't mind hearing Christmas tunes. However most of the ones they play on the commercial radio are tacky. Although I am not particularly religious I enjoy the old traditional sacred Christmas carols
