Tell me about your Barbershop.

Barbering is a very important job, it's a form of waste management; just as important an the Metropolitan Sewer District. There is actually a State Inspector of Barbershops.

The Barbershop is somewhere where fellows go to congregate and talk about sports, politics, race, current events, women and, each other. The same fellow has been cutting my hair for the last 20 years although I had to follow him through three different shops.

I went in to get a haircut and, they were "off the hook" -- more than usual! It was Saturday afternoon and I didn't make an appointment (never had to in 20 years) so, walk-in customers have to wait for scheduled customers to be cleared out. Question: How come every neighborhood mother brings their hyper-active and un-parented pack in to get the boys hair cut on Saturday? I was there for 3 hours for a $10.00 "Senior priced" Haircut; never again on Saturday!

Oh, I forgot to tell you why they were off the hook, they (there are three barbers in the shop) had just scored a "boosted" Keurig Coffee machine for 40 bucks and they were all going crazy using the machine, they went through the whole sample (4 per person) pack of 12 in 2 hours. They were all super animated and hyped from the caffeine in the coffee. Add that to mothers on cellphones, daughters making noise while their brothers were in the chair, comedian-customers, inebriated visitors and ESPN TV playing loudly over the din.

I may have to go to Super-cuts in the mall.

I'm married to my "barber." She'd cut my nuts off if I let anyone else touch my hair. And, yes, she is a trained professional.

Lucky you, the only way I could get a personal barber would be to hit the Lotto.

Wow! You are a hard core guy marrying a "professional nut cutter". My guy is an old "motorhead" and Elvis memorabilia collector. Our town is too small to have a line at the barbershop. So far,the two times I've been there, it was walk in and sit down. My spouse gives him a C+ for quality.

I get a haircut once every three months whether I need it or not, I go where it is cheapest and no line. I have no desire to sit in a chair having my hair cut but it starts to get in my eyes when driving which can be a pain.

A couple of years ago, my barber, Ramiro, moved his shop to another part of town. I still go there because he does such a great job. His barber shop is on the left side of the building and his wife's stationary store is on the right side. They live on the second floor.

With a huge family that includes his 8 children and his 23 grandchildren, Ramiro always has a story to tell. (He also has 7 brothers and sisters).

He recently raised his haircut price by 30 cents. Now, I'm paying $5.10 for a haircut. That's inflation for you!

We have three places here, all cleverly named "The Barbershop". In these shops, they make an effort to recreate the spa-like atmosphere of a beauty parlor, but for men. The waiting area features overstuffed leather chairs and free peanuts. The barbers are all attractive women, and in their individual cubicles, they each have a flat screen TV.

For $11, you get a haircut, all the trimming, a shampoo, and a shoulder massage. Beards are a little extra. I always give the girl a $20 and let her keep the change.

Beats Floyd every time.

In Guadalajara, the most common haircut options are: the traditional barbershop (peluquerias) like I use, the fancier uni-sex salons (esteticas unisex) catering to both men and women, and the men's salons (esteticas masculinas) where male barbers are available to cut your hair and female masseuses are available to take care of any other need that may "arise". Needless to say, the XYL wouldn't be too happy if I chose the last option.

The memorable Glen Plake, Superb Skier and Funny Flake!

That's a picture early in his career, the late 80's was the neon fashion era. https://forums.hamisland.net/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

I've met the guy a few times at ski promotions and the like. Never had the pleasure of skiing with him.
But he's a very decent guy who enjoys yakking with everybody, and a good ski ambassador.
