George Barris, icon of California car culture and designer/builder of many famous Hollywood custom cars including the Munster Koach, the Batmobile and the Beverly Hillbillies’ jalopy died yesterday at age 89.

Interestingly enough, the car he drove right up to the time of his death was...a Toyota Prius. Customized, of course.

I remember marveling over his cars (on TV and elsewhere) whilst growing up in these here United States.

The guy was a custom car genius. I always enjoyed seeing his creations whenever a new and whacky series came to television. In fact, you could almost bet he had his hands in designing and building the vehicles that fit the theme of the series. But then, I'm easily amused. He and his daughter were on an episode of American Pickers, and I believe Frank bought one of his cars. If I remember right, it was a coffin car. I don't remember the details surrounding the vehicle, but I thought the purchase price was pretty reasonable. At least to collectors it was a pretty good deal.

RIP George
