I got a message from a scanner feed app on my phone alerting me of heavy activity on the San Diego police frequency. So I activated the feed and sure enough I'm hearing a lot of activity... police, SWAT etc..as we speak. Turns out there is a sniper in an apartment building who has the police pinned down. He may have killed some people thus far but I an not sure.

More here.

2400 Brant Street is about four blocks from where my wife's business is but I think it's odd that I haven't heard about this and there's only on online source of news on it.

I did a general web search on Google and found a few sites carrying updated info. And the scanner feed is buzzing with constant activity. From what I gather the sniper is on an upper story bedroom. If you have a scanner nearby you can probably pick it up direct since it's close by.

It's on a couple of sites I'm familiar with.

Yeah, it's beginning to show up other places now, including the San Diego Union-Fishwrap site.

I think the sniper surrendered and they finally got him into custody.

Well, it's good to hear nobody was hurt. I would say the cops did a good job handling this incident.

From what I have read that neighborhood is considered to be a good and safe area. So I guess this caught people a bit off guard. It is also where San Diego's "Little Italy" is located. But these kinds of situations can happen just about anywhere. For example back around 2001 or 2002 a very similar situation occurred in the next town over from me. A very disturbed young man decided to go on a sniping spree from his 2nd floor private home. However that case ended in tragedy as the sniper killed a policeman and also his grandmother and the family dog and later on himself. That's why I was relieved to hear that nobody was killed or hurt in this situation that went down today. Hat's off to the San Diego cops for keeping their cool and getting the job done with no injury or loss of life.

Kind of unusual for the SDPD to manage something like that without killing someone. The sniper was black, BTW, so I'm sure they had plans to drop a bomb on the roof of the building which were thwarted by the guy's surrender.

Nah. That would make everything for blocks around very sticky.

Hmmm seems that little escapade shut down the SDI airport for a while as well

It sure did. A visiting friend got stuck there for a few hours on her flight back to SF, as a matter of fact. Why they shut down departing flights I can't say; landing aircraft do go right over the area the sniper was in—at an altitude low enough to be alarming if you aren't familiar with it—but departing flights go off in the opposite direction, out over the bay.

In any case, SAN is kind of a cul-de-sac on the airways so problems here don't reverberate throughout the air traffic system the way they do with some other airports.

Yea, an attack or issue at DEN is gonna be a bad time, major hub and all.

II was listening to the scanner feed from around 1:00 pm EST to the point where the suspect was taken into custody (round 5-6pm EST). All I can say is that from what I heard they (the cops) seemed to handle this in a very professional and very restrained manner. They seemed to take the routes that would result in the least possible chances of injury or death to the perp or anyone else. And they made out successful.

Now, had this same guy had not been a sniper and had merely been caught with a half a reefer in his possession all bets would be off...

Still, I am glad things worked out well.

As far as the airport was concerned as far as I heard they canceled incoming flights but allowed departures. Apparently the incoming glide path was in the snipers line of fire..

The tragedy in the affair is they SHUT DOWN Incoming flights to Lindberg, stranding thousands of people and having their travel plans trashed. When the Rat bastard was finally in custody they openned up the airport again.

Wait a minute... I thought this took place in San Diego, not Philadelphia...

My guess would be that they didn't want to take any chances. Incoming flights might not have enough fuel to be rerouted, so there's a calculated risk... and if I were running things, I'd try to route them away from the area. So that alone makes things crazy enough that I'd hold all outgoing flights until some sense of normalcy could return.

Well, it may have been an inconvenience but its still better than having an approaching aircraft fired upon. Better to be inconvenienced than killed.
