A couple of days ago, right in the midst of one of the worse geomagnetic storms to come along in a while, I made a JT65 QSO with ZS6WB in Lynwood Ridge, South Africa. That's damned near the antipodes of San Diego. Worked KJ3N that same night as well.

i was wondering if I would run into KJ3N tonight, but nyet nothing.

I tried to get some of the EU stations around midnight local, I don't think my setup has the oomph to make it over on the low bands

I see that you had a contact with my neighbor KD8JV on 80 meters yesterday around 1900 Zulu; he only lives a couple of miles away from me.

My Dentron Tuner will allow me to use the 160 meter band but, it's truly NVIS because I really don't have enough antenna. I have enough #15 magnet wire to make a dipole for that band but, not enough room to string it.

By the time 160 opens up; at the time you fellows were on the radio was past my bedtime.

160 is for sure a challenge for me, rig does tune the 80ocf on it, but it dont like it...

maybe, I dont think the rig liked 160 very well, it wasnt happy. but 80/40/20 for sure if you ever appear

No old buzzard ever said a 160M antenna be it a dipole, inverted L or whatever had to me straight, we know how things CAN be done. Then there is the old trick of connecting the inner and outer conductors of coax or the wires of ladder line together and feeding an 80M dipole against ground as a Marconi T. Now get on 160, have fun and stop complaining, you CAN do it and your rig won't complain either.

This is why I prefer manual tuners. You have to do some really stupid stuff to get a manual tuner to fail.

yeah id rather have a manual, the internal on the 570 didn't work right when I got it, I managed to get it working and now it just quits.. heh,

picked up a versa tuner ii to use. seems to tune the bands, I think the internal problem is buggering me a bit. its ether a cap or one of the relays in the internal ATU. cant tell if its just the bands but it looks like my rx is down about 10db from normal. and dont seem to be getting out as well as I was.. used to get a lot of -1 to -5 reports now seem to be getting -10 to -20 reports.

it was so strange, the guy is always mr CQ DX, yet called me... a non DX station.... well Indiana is a whole nother country but that is another story

anyway kinda bummed, not seeing any west coast nor any EU or SA. hope its just the band, but i got the feeling more is fuckered up over here then I thought... not impressed with the sig reports I been getting, down a ton

And only running 5-7 watts at the time.

Trouble is, it only takes that little and I've got stateside people calling me left and right.

been trying to nab that France station, no luck. I dont even see any west coasters in there at all. usually I see a ton of wc show up around 11p local.

after the problems with the rig, I dont think I am getting the performance out of this thing as I was. *could* be the band but I just don't think it is.

rig seems to check out, it appears the balun has went bad, well bad occasionally. sometimes it works just fine, other times not.
