I have long thought that my many interests have hindered my ability to get things done and may indicate a lack of self-control. I envy those who get good at one thing and isn't distracted by many interests. My list is quite long. Some are hobbies of opportunity, others are what I am really passionate about.

Amateur Astronomy
- Telescope Making
- Astrophotography
- Variable Star Observing
Amateur Radio
- Electronics
Model Railroading
- Railfanning
Music
- I play 6 different instruments and I write
Woodworking
Lockpicking
Cooking
Collecting old books
Reading
Home Improvement
- Electrical work
- Carpentry
Software development (that later turned into a career)

This list is not to try to impress, on the contrary, it appears someone took a book of hobbies, tore out the pages, and then scattered the torn pages onto the floor!

My wife and I don't have any kids (not that we didn't want any, nature made sure we couldn't) so that allows for this. And she is very patient with me (she deserves a medal and a raise).

Anyways, I came across this article:

http://inkwellscholars.org/habits-of-highly-creative-people-hobby-collecting/

It appears it isn't so bad after all and is a sign of a creative mind and it helps our brains expand.

I think it also shows that I have ADHD! (which I do).

Anyone else suffer from collecting hobbies?

Aww, if it helps any, you appear normal to me. But then....
Who the hell wants to spend eternity in heaven looking down and thinking that looks like fun, wish I'da tried that.
While the jury might still be out on whether or not there is an after life. It seems pretty conclusive that you can't take it (hobbies) with you.

I'm not that big in the collection scene but I am into collecting old antique pocket watches. Everything from the old vintage dollar watches, Westclox, Ingraham, etc. to the Waltham's and the more expensive ones. Even a couple of really old 1800's key winders. Something cool about having someone ask for a time check and you pull up a 100+ year old watch on a chain and read off the time, with excellent accuracy.

Huh, I collect lint. Someday, we should chance moving, a little at a time, and try to compare our collections.

I wonder if we have enough to start a museum?

Sounds like a plan man. No really, some of us collect radios, I collect watches, some collect model trains, old appliances, lamps, bulbs, tubes, telegraph insulators, fans, toasters, wines, etc. I guess as nature has us pegged we are foragers and gatherers. But put it all together and it would probably make for an interesting museum.

I read somewhere on the Interwebs that a study was done where they (whoever "they" are) asked a bunch of senior citizens about their regrets and the overwhelming consensus was that they did not necessarily regret things they had done during their life, but rather it was the things they had not done!

My other principle activity that sucks up most of my spare time (whatever that is) is being a Freemason.

Sure, being an amateur radio operator (did I ever tell you that I really dislike the term "ham radio") for nearly the past 25 years is personally satisfying to me, by being a Freemason I am ultimately doing good things for the people in my community. I am the secretary of two lodges and have just been appointed as a District Deputy Grand Master. If you are a Freemason, you probably have a pretty good idea of what these jobs entail and if you aren't one, well use your imagination!

Yeah, but if I wear my "cheaters", I would look like the late Jerry Garcia... or so I am told!

I didn't get the collecting gene. I tend to accumulate just enough to do whatever it is that I want - any more is just clutter.

High-end audio, radio, enough tools to do whatever DIY project I have in my sights. Outdoor/fitness stuff - I'll probably be picking up a kayak next year, and may put together a little home gym setup. Most of my hobbies, I've had for a long time.

That's also probably why I'll never get more than DXCC. There's just too much other stuff out there to do.
