I made him explain how he came up with the answer (I did it on my calculator first; I was Stuck On Stupid when the answer came up).

He called it "P.E.M.D.A.S" an acronym for Parenthesizes, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction.

He explained the order that the rule uses to solve math problems, there was no "P" or "E" so, you go to the next target, "M" and "D" and then you do the "A and "S

7 + 7 ÷ 7 + 7 X 7 - 7

7 ÷ 7=1 7 X 7=49

7 + 1=8 + 49 - 7

57 -7 = 50


I can understand and follow that method if that is what it takes to pass the test but, when I asked him, "How much is 7+7," he replied, "14. Then I asked, "How much is 14 divided by 7?" He replied, "2". I asked, "How much is 2 plus 7?" He said "9." I asked, "How much is 9 times 7," He said "63," then I asked, "how much is 63 minus 7"? His answer was "56"

¿Both answers are right?

The English call it BODMAS.

I was taught PEMDAS in the mid '90s.

MY High Diploma was dated 6/13/1971 We used Slide Rulers (Pre-Calculus was highest math offered)

My Associates of Applied Electro-Mechanical Engineering was in 1973; the curriculum included Calculus and Differential Equations.
We had TI-Engineering calculators purchased by our sponsor The General Electric Co.

In 1986, went back to study Optical Science, the only math need was that to fit the glasses, grind the eye glass lens and, fit prosthetic eyeballs.

I now know a different way to count however, the PEMDAS way does not work when i am counting dollars in my hand

I was taught My Dear Aunt Sally MDAS order of operations. Also, do the parenthesis, first in order of MDAS if needed, then the brackets in the same order. It gets confusing.

I thought that brackets (parentheses) were supposed to be used to emphasise which bits of this type of equation had to be calculated first or is it done by underscoring these days?

Eg: 7 + ((7 ÷ 7) + (7 X 7)) - 7 = ? or something like that. That would be 50 doing it my way, looks simpler than the PEDMAS solution explained by K0OM.

7 + (1 + 49) -7 = 7 + 50 - 7 = 50

The old Lotus 123, and ExCell, and I believe Open Office all assume PEMDAS to write equations in the cells. I have had advanced training for the first 2, this was taught to me. I use Open Office at home. I am not 100% if it does.

According to the PHP 5.6 interpreter, it's 50. Last night's answer was oxycodone induced :hahano:

Yes, because of no brackets that's right as well, you could conjure several answers from this equation.
