I lived in Lawrence the last time they came out. They are massively loud.

They can be really loud, but you know it's summer.

I hear them 24/7/365, it's called tinnitus.

We have 2 Periodical cicada hatches in our area, one on the west side of town and 5 years later, another hatch is in the Eastern part of the county.

I know your pain...all too well.I only did what you do on a part time BASSis (sic). Standing several feet away from 100+ decibels will have you hearing the bells. I remember laughing at the drummer because he used the roll up ear plugs. He does not have tinnitus. Why am I so stupid?

Have a tiny bit of tinnitus, side effect of chemo.
Always wore plugs when working the soundboard.

I have made some really stupid choices regarding my hearing. Lots of drugs and youth and rock and roll got in the way of the fuddy duddy stuff that old people are scared of, like losing my damn hearing! Fortunately, i have been on in-ear units for years and can adjust my volume to my liking, as well as have the exact mix i want in my ears, without the stage volume. Cymbals, snare, hiss and feedback are the main culprits. But even with IEM's, i have my constant friend screaming into my head day and night...it never stops, never takes a break, just ringing, 24/7/365. I did that to myself. :dunno:

Anyone who is near a hatch of these things and likes to fish needs to head to the closest lake or other large body of water armed with large flies or poppers that are made to resemble the species which is emerging. Guaranteed top-water action.

We are in Brood X territory which is probably one of the larger broods. I remember them in 1987 and in 2004.

Of course we get the "annual" ones every July and August.

I remember the 1987 one well. I felt like the entire apartment building was surrounded by huge power transformers.
