Despite what is printed on the label, most olive oil that is sold in "ordinary" grocery stores or even places like Whole Paycheck may not contain any olive oil at all! It can contain other oils such as hazelnut or other vegetable oils and only a small percentage, if any, is actual olive oil. And even though it may say it is imported from Italy, the point of origin can actually be Greece or Spain and then shipped to Italy.

It used to be that when you opened a bottle or can of olive oil, it had a very recognizable aroma, but nowadays, there is almost no discernible smell at all.

So where do you buy your olive oil and how do you know it is genuine?

You should still be able to discern the real thing with your sense of smell. I get mine locally at a place called Dorthy Lane Market. They only stock gourmet, and the purest foods. They ship. Their Best deal is the real thing from Tuscany. It is a bit pricey at $20 for 500 ml, but you won't be disappointed. I allowed my friend who bragged about getting extra virgin olive oil from extra virgins at the local Kroger for $5.00 to smell the difference. I don't trust the refrigerator test anymore. There are non olive oils that will solidify just like real olive oil. Here is a link to the aforementioned product. It smells/tastes like the $30 Tuscan brands.

Local store, control here on quality of goods is quite strict so anyone trying to sell fake stuff gets slapped with a few 100.000 euro fine and destruction of the supply and costs to get the stuff out of all shops.
Nice deterrent actually.

There is a small Italian restraint we frequent. They use the best olive oil and balsamic vinegar we have ever found. I tried to buy the balsamic from a local distributer, but they won't sell to peons like me. It's handled by Shamrock. So when we go to the place, we just buy some there. They sell us a 16oz cup full of it pretty inexpensively. As for the olive oil, we buy some of that there, too, for dipping, and salad dressing. For cooking, we just use the EV olive oil from Costco. It isn't too bad for what it is, but for the good stuff, we use the other.

My Mom uses olive oil for cooking, in salads, etc. The funny thing was she was just reading an article that was explaining this. For example if you buy a bottle of expensive imported olive oil labeled "product of Italy" and it has an authentic sounding Italian name on the label it doesn't mean the oil in the bottle was produced in Italy nor does it mean the contents is even olive oil. They say it's very hard to tell if its the genuine article unless you actually buy it directly from the grower/producer. And even then can you be 100% certain that he oil he is putting in the bottle comes from his olive trees ??

California has the best for us in the states. Olive oil is like fruit juice, you want it fresh.

Americans don't like any kind of smell.
