Who's here and what are you looking for?

I'm here.

Not really looking for anything big. Now, if someone wants to get something for me, out of the goodness of their hearts, there are a couple of things I can think of...

Today's reason is: "Slightly rained in!"

A cell moved through the area with just a few minutes warning. Many vendors were away from wares left unattended in the backs of their pickups.

And they think they can get full market value for dirty, rusty stuff.

Yeah, some of them do.

I guess I didn't spot you all day... thought I did at one point, but I wasn't sure and you didn't respond when I called you, so I guess not.

Did see W4RLR. Walked right past me, down in the arena by the Kenwood area (which seems a little emptier than it did last year, even though it's roughly the same space). Now, I'm not sure if he didn't recognize me... or he did...

I recognized Fred, even though he may not be a better person for it. We had a nice ham meeting around the dinner table. Too much food, and iced tea were consumed. Those of you not present were talked about.

Yeah, I ended up there for a good hour, waiting for Mike to work his way down after the Legal forum. We ended up Berting with the guys for a good bit, helped them close up shop.

Should be back there circa noon, Norma N3YJJ insisted we join the guys for lunch. I never argue with a wife, even if it is N3TIR's.

The PTT on my ICW32A decided to break yesterday, so I'm basically sans radio today.

By the way...

I noticed a sign in the entranceway of the Silver Arena today. Now, I know a lot of you will react to this in disbelief, and I too will believe it when I see it happen. So I took a picture of the sign, and I'll post it sometime tomorrow, after I get home and have a chance to download the pictures from my camera.

Coming soon - Enhanced Ticket Prices!

I would be happy if they put up Paradise and paved the parking lot, but any improvement is welcomed.

Scored a couple good deals today - one was on a Tektronix PG509 Pulse Generator plugin and another was a CPI CP2500 remote-mountable CB. It's the mobile version of their CP2000 base rig. I can use the trunk unit's Interface boards as a model for a pair of homebrew boards for the '2500 I was building from a '2000 or I can run this one. There's a spare control head kicking around my stash of CPI goodies.

Nice to see you and the WACOM crew, Ron.

Some guy wanting $300 for a TS-520, another wanting 400 for a FT-101E with a YC-601, someone had a B & K tube tester, they didn't know if it worked but was asking 350 for it. I bought a 1040 and 2040 in like new condx for $200 a few years back. I used that setup when they first came out. It really is a nice test fixture combo. I was toying with the idea of putting a DDS and associated circuitry in the 2040 for use beyond it's 11M design.

I'm going to a hamfest in Sacramento tomorrow.

It'll be interesting to see if the pricing is ebay like there too.

The last time I went to this hamfest, the pricing was way low. Got that Yaesu ft-767gx with the 6/2/440 modules for $300.

I'm hoping to find a cheap complete 440 repeater. 440 in Sac is dead because of Pave Paws restrictions.

Nice to see you and the WACOM crew, Ron.Yes, very nice as always. And I think you scored a few brownie points with the WACOM gang by helping their newbie out... you were referred to the rest of the day as "The Drake Guy", and very highly as well.

Remind me to email you the original. This is resized & cropped so that we don't drive everyone's browsers nutz.

I'm going to talk with N3TIR and then with the WASH crew. Maybe next year, we'll go in on a space, and have it funnelled through Bud's hands so that we're together with them. Which shouldn't be a problem, since the two clubs have a big membership overlap.

I saw a lot of good stuff. Not much Drake or Hallicrafters this year, and Heathkit was down as well. A lot of good Collins, especially ex-military.

But, yes, prices tended to be on the high sides. And, frankly, after the quick downpours once Friday, twice Saturday (only about 5 - 10 minutes or so each time) some of that gear wasn't covered up in time, so I'd be VERY leary.

I was hoping for a small tube tester cheap. Saw no small ones, and no cheap ones.

Pics as promised. There's a church whose lot is made available for Hamvention parking and they've served breakfast, lunch and coffee to us for years. Its access street sees a number of RVs parked for the week. This one - from Texas - had an interesting guard on duty up front. You'll have to look closely:

This is a big honkin' crank-up tower. According to the Luso crew it weighs 18 tons; at least 3/4 of that being aluminum. New owner lives in KY...and given the methneck population in that area of the country, I wonder how long it'll be before the scrappers attempt a run on it:

Everyone has their "score of the hamfest" tale. For Ron's fellow WACOM club member Bob it was the Drake RV-7 VFO which I found for him in the fleamarket not 100 yards from their tent; this after dragging him on a wild goose chase for the OTHER one which I saw for sale. Mine was a CP-2500, the mobile version of CPI's CP-2000 base rig. Rare as hell and fetches a premium, especially on eBay. I'm going to scratchbuild my own trunk unit from a junker -2000, using this one as an example. I already have a control head and most of the other needed parts:

13928You did hear how high that mutha' will go, won't you?

Over 100 feet, I don't recall the exact number offhand.

The reason this came up...

Mike K3AIR is getting hitched in a few months. (Man never learns, does he? Not that I should talk) He's going to be moving in to his fiance's QTH. Now, she's agreed to let him put in a tower for his new shack. The only thing is, she doesn't like the tower he has at his house -- specifically, the guy wires. She doesn't like them, for aesthetic reasons. So she asked him about getting a self-supporting and/or crank-up tower.

So he sent her a couple of pictures of the Luso, along with some text mentioning the height, and asked her if this would be OK.

He wouldn't tell me her exact response. Needless to say, positive, it wasn't.

I stand erected. Unlike Mike's proposed tower. The one in the photo telescopes to 148ft and is $69k without antennas.

I also have mixed feelings regarding the proposed cohabitation and ban on aerials, and based on conversations we've had you can pretty much guess my course of action regarding such.

That wouldn't jibe with my antenna plans, either. I currently have two of the DX-SWL slopers in the air, oriented SE and SW. Plans are for five total at NE, NW and S. Another tower of 5 of their ham band equivalents for 160/80/40M...maybe 30M. For what they are, these things work very well.
