Been getting so sick and tired of fast food and crappy truckstop fare. I broke down and bought some cooking utensils for the truck.

http://i.imgur.com/grORcYz.jpg

It runs on butane but only a small can. Works pretty damned good too

1.5 qt crockpot. I also have a 3 qt one as well. It runs on an inverter and takes 120vac at 90w. My 400w inverter handles it nicely
http://i.imgur.com/Rt1kfkO.jpg

Lunchbox cooker. Doubles as a small oven and a steamer. Heats food to 300 degrees and actually COOKS food, not just warm it up. Runs on 12vdc. Has a power port plug. 144w at 12v.

I've been cooking for a few weeks with the lunchbox and crockpot. Heres a few dishes I've concocted.

Boneless pork chops in cream of chicken soup. Doesnt look appetizing but it was awesome! Definitly on my repeat list
http://i.imgur.com/tGscdf1.jpg

Heres what i did with the remaining soup. Minute rice and a bit of the leftover onion. Made a tasty side
http://i.imgur.com/H14yaXZ.jpg

Some vegetable beef soup.http://i.imgur.com/YPkwlhn.jpg

In my lunchbox cooker i made bbq drumsticks And steamed veggies.
http://i.imgur.com/gCtigff.jpg

Tonight using the butane stove, I made spaghetti with stew beef, sauteed mushrooms and onions.http://i.imgur.com/SkYIMUB.jpg

I tellya! I ain't never eaten so well while on the road!

Grrr on the 8 image limit!!

Thanks. Yeah they are. I have a 20oz water heater too but the site limits to 8 images.

I'm hoping to both save money AND get a better handle on my health this way.

My usual spending on truckstop and fast food was around $175 to $200 a week. This week i spent $68 on food and other small items and that'll carry me for a week!

I havent eaten fast food or truckstop food for almost 2 weeks now. Can't say i feel much better yet. I'm still getting a handle on cutting meals to healthy portions. Got nobody in the truck to smack my knuckles lol

As a kid, I was fascinated by the sleepers on trucks. In the early 60s, Dad and I would visit the annual automotive show at the state fair in Dallas. There were usually a few big trucks to climb into. I bet they're even better now.

No microwave. I had one a while ago but the big inverter is busted and dont know when the company will replace it. Thats half the reason i got the stove. I have a 12v Igloo 40qt cooler which works ok. I keep frozen veggies in it and they stay froze for 2 or 3 days which is good

Why wait for an inefficient power system when you can go 12V with a WaveBox? http://www.power-hunt.com/wavebox.php

I've heard baaaad things about them. Burning the power port out most often. Burning the truck down less often. Basically it runs at 12v at less then 150w when run direct from battery. It says 660w but nope not true when using battery alone. It might start at 660w but unless you have a huge 8pack battery system OR you run the engine or genpack, in less then 3 minutes the power is dropped by 50% or more depending on batt condition.

My inverter broke cuz my 600w MW kept pulling the battery voltage down and that burned the inverter out. Also the low voltage damaged the MW itself. If my truck would idle, my alternator could keep the voltage and wattage up to properly support a powerhog like that. My company has the idle limited to 3 minutes and thats it. It takes forever to warm things up at 600w.

I'm surprised that hasn't become a reality show with a cast of drivers, mechanics, truck stop life, weigh staton staff, etc. Same for railroads, passenger and cargo aircraft and maritime vessels, etc.

Something like Ice Road Truckers but emphasis on social and personal lives against a technically accurate background.

You're making this waaaaay too difficult!

Get the book "Manifold Destiny" (http://www.amazon.com/Manifold-Destiny-Guide-Cooking-Engine/dp/1416596232) and learn how to cook using the heat from your exhaust manifold. Just pull over and put the food on your exhaust manifold an hour or so before you plan to eat and it will be nicely cooked by dinner time!

The dishwasher is kept in the drivers seat holding the steering wheel most of the day. When its not in the drivers seat, it's lying on the bunk watching tv on the laptop...lol

The sink? Well thats just a simple bowl I fill with hot water and dish soap. After I use each dish, pan bowl or whatever, I wipe it out with a paper towel, making sure I get everything out. I take a sponge or washcloth and wash the dishes with the hot water. I toss out the dirty water and replace with clean. I get a clean cloth and wipe own the soapy dishes then towel dry them and put them away. Then I wipe down the camp stove when it's cool enough and put that away.

It's a time consuming process and a PITA but its better then getting food poisoning or some other foodborne illness.

My truck is all push button except for the locks. Still got the manual post locks. My last truck had power locks on it which I miss, but still I like what I got

My Dad is a retired OTR driver. I showed him the pics. He was an owner/operator back in the 70's and had a Peterbilt cab over. He said that he had a hot plate on inverter. Nothing fancy like you have going on. His last 25 years was driving for Big R. It was either truckstops/eateries near the motels, or room temp sealed lunches, and fresh fruit. Most folks do not realize what you professional drivers have to put up with.

My rice cooker can bring a pot of water to a full rolling boil in 6 minutes. Basically its just a pot with a built in heating coil strong enough to boil things. It's also got a steamer container so i can steam veggies as well as cook things. I wish i had bought one years ago!

Forget the microwave. That ain't food.
If you want to get healthy, cut out pasta and bread.
Just steamed veggies and meat. And eat the fat.
Don't listen to the lies.
Your cooking looks good, and you're saving a bunch of money while eating better food.

Well, microwaves are not as bad as the rhetoric. Heat is heat. However the issue with fats is right on. We need them.

If you have medical issues that cause inflammation in the arteries, that is how the fats get stuck, on the rough walls.

Fat doesn't stick your arteries. Cholesterol does. The reason it sticks is because of damage to the arterial/venal wall. What caused the damage? Sugar. Cholesterol is the body's "plumber's putty". It was needed where it is.

Microwave - google and see. I threw mine away and don't miss it. Just think about microwaving food for a minute. Does it even sound like it would be ok?

You might have trouble finding medical studies from the establishment that back up what I say. Take that anyway you want.

Just look at the food pyramid. Does that look right to you? Eat the most of a food that didn't exist a milennia ago?

Edit: if you trust the medical/pharmaceutical industry and the government, then follow their recommendations. If not, then well?

I can Google damned near anything and come up with all kinds of wacko stuff. As far as thinking about it, it sounds perfectly okay to me. All the microwaves do is excite the water molecules within the food, just like heat from a flame does. You're an amateur radio operator, you should understand non-ionizing radiation better than most people.

You might have trouble finding medical studies from the establishment that back up what I say. Take that anyway you want.

I'll take it to mean that you're making statements with no basis in established fact.

Just the water molecules? Only?

Grains. Paleo man had no refined grains. But now it is supposed to be the majority of our diet? And diabetes is rampant now?
and fat is at the top, eat sparingly? Man is made to eat fat in much larger quantity than is now proposed. Fat does not make you fat.

I'm not going to provide any supporting materials/links. You win. I'm not annoyed, I just don't have time to play. I said my piece and I'm done. Maybe some will follow up and learn, maybe some won't. Nothing's changed.

Yep. If you disagree, then present your evidence to the contrary.

Grains. Paleo man had no refined grains.

If you're talking about white flour, then you've got a point. But “paleo man” did indeed eat whole grains and other other forms of carbohydrates when he could get them. They are a necessary part of the human diet.

That's a cop-out. You're not willing to provide the supporting materials because you know there aren't any—at least, none that hold up under scrutiny. You need to stop reading Natural News and The Food Babe and spend that time studying the real scientific data.

Ya know, I agreed with the cholesterol issues, qualified with inflammation from something. And yes, too much sugar in the diet can do that, but there are other possibilities for inflammation, such as long term infections, and such. As far as the microwave statement goes, heat is heat. The methodology used affects what heats up in what manner, but never mind.

Cholesterol IS a fat. Heat IS heat, microwaves are not ionizing like radioactivity or certain chemical reactions.

Carry on bat boyeee. This thread is all about you. Oh wait, he doesn't have the time to play? :dunno:

Most definitely! Already steamed a frozen chicken breast and a cup of frozen veggies. If i had that put in the cooler, all the frozen stuff would last about 3 days and then spoil. I got the freezer set at zero so this stuff will last til i want to eat it.

So happy to be off the fast food too. Since I've been doing my own cooking, I've lost 30lbs since February. Looking to lose more too
