So I found a couple of CB waklie talkies, one 3 channel one 6 channel. They use crystals. I want to mess around with one of them and see what what it will do.
What can I plug in or make to plug in the RX crystal socket to receive something other than CB? Variable capacitor? Anyone have a circuit diagram of something that will work like one that I can use to make it more frequency agile? It's not for any purpose other than to see what it will do.

An LC network around 9 MHz can work as VFO, but will stay limited in range.

Something like this?

If you are going to try that, I'd put a coupling cap between the collector and the rig so you don't run the 3 V supply into the radio.

Yep, that is how we broadbanded the 23 channel Cb's in the time.
And the TR 7200G of Kenwood a chrystal controlled 2 meter transceiver ;)
Bit finicky but it worked

I'll measure the voltage from the socket to see if there is any, or enough voltage present to run it first.

I'll see if there's anything left at the local RS. Ours is closing now.

How 'bout that. A TRC 209 just fell into my lap. I think I have a mic that will fit it too. So far it's in 100% working order.

Where do you connect the leenyar?

I hope you were wearing a cup.

You gonna start a HAMIS net on 27.025? ;)

I think I actually have a pair of crystals for that freq. I put them all in the 6 channel talkie. And to think I went into an old shop for something completely different.

Yeah, that TRC 209 was 5 bucks. Haven't found one for sale online yet. I wonder what I can get for it BUT, it brings back memories of my misspent yoot.

It can go anywhere.

That's kind of a "collectors" talkie, raayt thar.

I used to have a couple of Handic 65C's with microphones and antennas, just like this:

OOoooo! Never saw one of those.

I got to looking around the old parts I have sitting around and of all things, I found a Radio Shack power mic with the 5 pin din connector! Popped in some new batteries and it all works. Just amazing. Just amazing.

Years ago, when I was about 10 years old, a friend had a TRC 201. I stuck a variable capacitor in one of the crystal sockets and we listened to VOA on the whip antenna half the night.

On Ebay there are a couple of simple, very small pcb kits, with specific IC components, covering a very wide band-width. If I remember where I last put them I'll give details, possibly tomorrow.

LTC1799 from Linear Technology is one of the chips.
