View Full Version : I got this from the "Estate of an SK"

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice the trend towards a lot more of things being sold on Ebay, CL, QTH, the Zed and others, seem to be posted as having come from the estate of an SK? Usually followed by "he took good care of it, it is minty, 9.5 out of 10, but I have no way to test it, so it is being sold as is".

WTF is up with this? Do 5,000 hams die daily leaving an estate of all this equipment? And, the price is usually twice what it should be (as usual). Do these clowns think hams are sympathetic and will pay more than give away prices for something just because the previous owner is supposedly an SK?

Sooo, like how old are you? Have you bought any new amateur radio gear lately? :stickpoke:

We had 2 people in our club sk in the past 6 months and they willed their gear to the club. We sold it all today at a local fest. If those 2 are any indication maybe they are dropping at what seems like a high rate.

Do the math.
700.000 hams in the USA of which most are older gents.
Lets presume a deathrate of 1.5% a year ( actually it will be higher) of those 700.000/
Meaning every year we will see 10.500 Hams pop up as SK.

Last thing I bought was the Yaesu FT 2000 - D a few years back.

We actually have a guy in charge of "Estate Sales" at our club. Most spouses don't have the foggiest idea what an SKs equipment does let alone what it's worth. Our club does look like a senior citizens center at times.

I'm just waiting for Pat to keel over from a heart attack, so I can watch the vintage radio market collapse.

I'm waiting for him to keel over so that the EPA can declare his property a Superfund site.

There was a guy like Pat in the Bay Area who died about 10 years ago.

The widow had his stuff on ebay for at least 6 months straight.

Why am I not surprised? You know the rule; if it smells funny don't buy it, don't boink it.

If anything, I empathize with his kids, although the problem is solved with a call to a dumpster service and hiring a few off Craigslist to empty the place.
