So, once again, the boss and are sitting in the PennDOT Drivers License Center.

Little Miss Field Day just walked in with the driving examiner... walked right past us and sat down to gt her picture taken.

She passed.

Oh, my. There goes my insurance premium, right through the roof...

Other than that, though...:clap::clap::clap:

Good News ! I remember the high Insurance premiums, but all 3 of our kids took drivers ed in high school and we did get a little bit of a discount on our rates. Wasn't much, 5% I think, but it did help.

You know what I don't get?

How the hell do people manage to text AND drive? (Never mind that they shouldn't!!)

I tried to type a few things on this iPad while on the trip back, and it was almost impossible, between one thing and another. OK, granted, I-79 isn't exactly a smooth road, but even so... I gave up and listened to the Boss side-seat drive, as LMFD had a huge grin on her face, the whole way back.

That LMFD adventure is like the auto insurance TV commercial, the actor shares your pain. Dad tagged me on his policy with the mandate I pay the additional cost, no problem and If I can brag a little never had an at fault "accident" in my driving career. A bit of sarcasm there, I call them incidents and sometimes stupids, never accidents. The occasional mechanical failure is usually due to inspection and maintenance negligence, the VAST majority are caused by stupid drivers who upon getting their license toss the manual out the window.

Just to clarify, IMO most manufacturing defects can be caught with close inspection and preventive maintenance like I performed on a regular basis, much closer inspection than done by the state. Yeah, that was before cars became mechanical nightmares and the worst nightmare being the repair bill.

Drivers ED for me consisted of going to the golf course with the coach that was teaching the class, so he could have a beer. I really miss those days.

When my stepbrother got his first licence in 1990..my and my parent's car insurance was unceremoniously non-renewed. I wound up changing my address to a friend's house to once again get insurance. Mom and stepdad had major headaches getting insurance again...as the bank that had the paper on their car did not allow excluded drivers on the policy.

Passed the first time, although I had been driving since 13...learned on a manual transmission F-150. After being scared shitless by stalling out in traffic a few times, I didn't have any fear left for the DMV examiner.

I did mine right after a blizzard....

had to get pushed out a few intersections where the state had piled about 16" of snow onto the city street (and well the city don't really plow cept for a few certain roads) I don't care who you are, but a low sitting car will not go though 16" of snow. even if it is a front wheel drive....

Im one of those rare drivers who went from NO drivers license to a Class 1/a license. I got mine right at the time the system was switching to the CDL from the Chauffeurs license. I got my Class 1 learners permit despite having no class 5 license.

I went to school in Albany NY and there was a loophole (now closed if i remember right) that allowed class1 learners permit with no DL. The school thought that was a bit unusual but allowed me to train as there was no legal standing for them to refuse me. Id had the class 5 car learners permit several times in previous years so i did have a very little bit of experience.

I think doing that actually was better for me in the long run as the driving instructors didnt have to break bad habits. I also think it gave me a bigger sense of responsibility as i never drove as a teenager and i was past the "wild hare" part of my life. To me, having my cdl is very important as i starve without it. That kept me from driving badly in the very beginning.

Yep, it took Eddie about 30 times before he figured it out. The whole time we were telling him "Eddie make it round", he was hell bent on the oval wheel. He kept muttering under his breath "The WIK said make it oval". And that's all we know.

Congrats to LMFD. We're still trying to get my 17 year old to get his license. He doesn't seem overly interested at this point.

Me too—a three-on-the-tree (with OD), no less. Remember those?

I've driven one - a friend's '48 Dodge pickup, which also was my introduction to double-clutching - but never a contemporary vehicle.

Oddly, I've never driven a 4-speed, just the one 3, fives, and a few sixes.

I have. A 13-speed is a really sweet little box; an 18-speed is only necessary if you're doing permit load (overweight) hauling.

Currently, I have a 21 speed. My old Schwinn was only a 3 on the bar. Oh, more than two wheels? Never mind.
