My latest car has no external thermometer. I'm inclined to think that they normally run off the engine management which monitors the air intake temperature.
Really it's to give some idea of air temperature at road level because, many years ago, I was caught out by an icy road in the early hours of a JUNE morning and left the car in a hedge.
I fitted a thermometer under a door sill but the car body still warms it up considerably so I wondered if fitting it to a door mirror would be better or sticking it in the air intake? I can't hang it under the car, it's a 4x4 and wouldn't last 5 minutes.
