Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, openly declared himself as gay yesterday, saying "While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me."

Generally the take on it around here is meh. Good for him. It's not a big deal anymore. We accept this as normal.

meh.

It will be nice when something like this is not a story.

Cook talked a lot about privacy in his decision not to come out earlier. On the other hand, activists say that someone like him should come out to encourage others not to be afraid.

I get both arguments, really. In certain parts of the country and in certain businesses, coming out is no big deal. I seriously doubt that Cook even being closeted gay in say, the oil industry, he would have gotten as far as he has. Being accepted as a corporate club member is ok if you're gay or a woman in tech, but not in a lot of other industries.

OTOH, it would be nice if a person could bring their sig O to a social function and not have that be a big deal. Someone like Cook coming out helps lower the "stigma" of being gay for the everyday person.

The stigma thing is not just the hard core haters. Most people in my and Carl's generation grew up with the concept that being gay was different and to be either feared or shunned, even in the Bay Area. It takes a while for that kind of voodoo to filter out of a society's consciousness.

Pretty much on target. Most were saying it was more important to them that Apple fix their iOS and drop the price of the i6.

Attention whoring?

W3WN

Maybe.

A persons race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc etc etc... none of that ought to matter. Do they have the skills and the smarts to do the job? That and only that is or what should be important.

Attention whoring?

No, someone from Forbes contacted him about it after was outed by Simon Hobbs on CNBC.

As Ron stated above, shouldn't matter in the least. I work with a number of LBGT staff and nobody cares about anyone else's orientation unless they themselves make an issue of it.

Ergo, my "attention whoring" comments.

Most are far too concerned about meeting deadlines or getting a visit from "...that security bastard!..." to worry about the after-hours pursuits of their colleagues.

I agree—it shouldn't matter in the least. But, at this moment in history it still does. Cook never made an issue of it until he was contacted by Forbes. I don't see it playing out as big news anywhere, more of a casual aside, which is a good thing.

Now, if you want to get into attention whoring, how about the (gay) former CEO of BP, who's publishing a book titled The Glass Closet?

I can think of a number of others in industry who are guilty of it, too.

There's an unfair stigma accompanying the alternative lifestyle crowd in certain regimes: They're automatically assumed to be promiscuous and predatory. In my experience, the career professional seems to be more settled WRT family dynamics than the average schlub on the streets, so this isn't usually an issue. But as with anything else you always have the outliers.

Correct, nobody should care. Sadly, many do, to the point where it's a thing every two years during elections as to whether the GOP candidate hates gays enough to win the primary.

It's only funny until your Windoze box contracts (insert_favorite_weaponized_0_day_exploit_here). Then it's fucking hilarious, unless you're on an organization's Incident Response Team and an owned asset is truly 0wn3d.

I never had a problem with my Sinclair 2000 or TI 99-4A with the expansion box. I could program a loop in a heartbeat. Of course, that wasn't the goal, so most my programs usually did end up chasing their tails. The rest pretty much came to a screeching halt after the first several lines.

Weird. I don't understand why a web interface would not work on a Mac, especially since Chrome and Safari both use the same WebKit underpinnings.

Could this issue be Apple's recent defuxoring of Java? There needs to be some extra steps in getting JNLP files to actually start.

I have this issue with ALL JNLPs, especially those running on IP KVMs and IPMI ports. It does not break my heart, my non-real computer is still a 6 year old bad ass little Unix workstation on my lap.

JNLPs--Jukeboxes need LPs (long play vinyl records)

IP Initial Point--An aviation term

KVMs--Kilovolts per Meter Squared (a shocking revelation)

IPMI--I Pissed My Innerwear (incontinent)

I hope that helps.

If I remember correctly, the announcement was meant to head off an article that was being published. If it is mostly public anyway, why not state it in your own terms first?

It was very difficult for me to come out of the closet, and I was, and still am a great unknown. I would imagine that a well known person would have an even harder time coming out, unless they were facing a forced outing (which I abhor). Couple the financial interests that will cause some homophobes to boycott a product based entirely on the CEO's sexual orientation, and nothing else. I used to belong to a religious cult, and those loonies were boycotting satanic corporations like Procter & Gamble (http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/procter.asp) every day
