The 14 year old was a friend of my daughter's. She's known him since second grade. As you can imagine, she's pretty upset. The airport is just to the east of us and is used quite heavily for training, as the Bob Miller Flight School is based there. I used to go there to work on the Marti RPU gear for a local radio station which was mounted up in the back seat of a Cessna 172 for live traffic reports, before they nixed the use of aircraft for that purpose a few years ago, so I know a few of the pilots and other people who run the place. I don't know yet if the deceased pilot is one of the guys I used to chat with over there or not. Sad day.
I'm sorry, Kel. Hugs all around...

It's tough on everyone but harder on the kids. Sorry.

I'm truly sorry to her this sad news. Give the kids a hug, and keep one for yourself.

It would be interesting to see what they come up with for a cause. They are both high wing planes, so visibilty in the 'up' direction is limited, though on the Searey, it looks like the pilot sits well ahead of the wing. Always sad to see something like this happen. I had a few 'close calls' when I was flying and they still sometimes wake me up at night, 40 years later. One of the scarier ones was when a Cessna came up under my low wing Piper and neither of us knew that the other was there. He was in a steep climb going west, and I was in a nose-high descent toward the airport he had recently left.
Condolences from here as well.

Thanks, guys. From what the kids have told me, it was a pretty sad day at school today. The school made grief counselors available.

My condolences especially to your daughter. I vaguely remember how hard the first death of a friend could be to a kid. When you are young and thinking you will live forever, the impact of friends dying is just that much harder.
So sorry to hear this Kel... hugs and good thoughts to you and your kids.

My oldest was in orchestra with James. I just signed the permission slip to allow him to go on a "field trip" Friday morning. The orchestra is going to play at his funeral. It's difficult fighting back tears right now. I don't even want to think about losing a child this way.
