View Full Version : Return To The Forbidden Planet
Anyone ever hear of this play? Is it any good?
We were at Little Miss Field Day's last High School Open House. Ran into the head of the theatre department (don't worry, he's fine). He told us that this is the play the HS will be performing in the Spring.
From the Wikipedia description, it sounds like they've reworked the old 1950's movie Forbidden Planet (starring Leslie "and don't call me Shirley" Nielson) into a musical. And both are based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. So the pedigree is sound.
But is it any good?

I just went to YouTube and typed it in, and there are some hits on there, from a High School play maybe. One set looks like it is pretty much all the songs and dance numbers from the play. It looks like it should be fun for the kids as well as the folks watching.

I hope so, I really do.
After last year's disappointment, and considering that she's now a senior, I was really hoping they'd pick a play that could showcase her as the lead actress, or at least lead supporting actress. (Yeah, I know that my daughter's well being is not the primary consideration in the selection of the school play). I think she's earned it, especially after the two important-but-minor roles she's had the last two years.
She wants one of the two lead actress roles. I'm scared that they're going to cast her as the plays equivalent to Robbie the Robot.
Also considering the (lack of) props and the (lack of) budget that the school play has had the last two years... I'm wondering how they're going to pull this one off.

Strange, Altair IV exploded at the end of the movie so how can they return to a planet that doesn't exist? The same way Godzilla King Of The Monsters returned for a dozen pictures after disintegrating at the bottom of Tokyo Bay? Since it's a musical they really should have used the original theme song by The David Rose Orchestra, a haunting melody the producers decided not to use for the movie. "Long" John Nebel, the first Coast To Coast AM style talk show host who came on WOR right after Jean Shepherd however used it as his theme song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqEfuELtEpA

Actually, there's an explanation for that in the story. At least from what I saw on Wikipedia.

Damn, you're chronologically positioning me again. I remember LJN -- and Shep, of course -- and that theme song.
No idea why the musical producers chose the music that they did. You'll have to ask them.

Sounds like a name you would find on a strip joint or adult bookstore? In a conservative state, Nebraska has both oddly enough...

Michael Rennie was ill the day the earth stood still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear
Claude Raines was the invisible man
Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space
And this is how the message ran..
Every time I see this thread I wish I could see this play. Or at least read the book. Hope LMFD has fun with it.
Has anyone seen the script? I got a .pdf file of it. Seems to be a musical. A lot of songs, more score than dialog from what I can see.
