Scientists say it the biggest one in years.

Those solar explosions are really impressive. It always amazes me how many things he big ones can FU. Hopefully the carburetor for my backup jenny gets here before the solar storm blows (or sucks) the wire off all the power poles.

Anyone remember the X class flares of 2003?

speaking of X class flares.....there was a X 1.6 flare @ 1745 UTC that produced a full halo CME...

the wavefront will reach the Earth sometime tomorrow & is expected to produce G2-G3
geomagnetic storm levels...Solar wind is expected to reach ~ 800 km/sec....possible HF radio
blackouts may ensue....

for all my solar needs I usually check out this website:

Yup. Aurora seen in Mexico.
My mother was still alive for that event. She often told me about an aurora which occurred when she was a pre-teen, growing up in the WV mountains. I tracked that one down to either 1935 or 36, as there were consecutive years which produced displays observed in the far south. "It was like the woods were on fire" - and was probably scary to folks who rarely (if ever) saw them.

I had to take her to see the '03 aurora. We drove to several state parks - along with 'DSG - and watched them for hours. I'll likely not experience an event that vivid again in my lifetime unless the sun does some surprising things.

Oh I'd say about 25mcg of clear dot can help things along a bit. (;->) I don't remember the year, but one night we were leaving grandma's house and when her north facing door opened we saw the whole sky lit up a shimmering green, I'll never forget it. There have been events since then, but with increasing light pollution I never saw them and probably won't any time soon if ever.

Not a lot, but what I did was good... like cutting the dot over the i in the callsign of a special QSL card out and putting it under my tongue on New Year's Eve while smoking a hell of a lot of weed and listening to 3885 AM. That devolved into The Night Of The Slimatron, December 31, 1970, a date that will live in infamy. Just for the L of it, here is "Howard Cosmell", the fartscaster in his Porkrot Studio who gave a blow by blow description until it BLEW putting him off the air amid... quite a mess.

I worked Germany on 10m from the convention using an IC-7600 and a tribander about 50' up on a portable tower.

I wanted to see if the aurora borealis would be visible as predicted by the news media in our latitude...... I did notice some extra light in the northern sky with a clear night here but it was not as intense as i've seen in previous other aurora displays.....:dunno:

Yeah, kinda a fizzle and none of that really neat fire in the sky stuff and melting polar ice, oh well.

Only one catch, the Slimatron Tim brought to the 'fester doesn't even begin to resemble The Beast Of Porkrot, it's like a goldfish compared to the Frankenstein monster.
