View Full Version : No DX? Really?

So, last night I'm trolling 80m JT65 and doing my usual CQ DX bit. It's a bit crowded with "locals" (meaning USA hams), making it a little difficult to find a spot to call. I decide to wait a bit to see if things will settle down (it's around 03:30z) and some of these guys will nod off to sleep.

About 03:40z I get the following email from a guy in Alabama:

Subject: Mind if I call you on 80m?

You are calling CQ DX. There isnt any. I need DE on 80m.

I write back:

Funny, I'm hearing 3 DX stations.

I don't get any reply, but then proceed to work ON7ZJ (04:15z), ZS6BUN (04:25z), and EI1DG (04:40z). So much for no DX, eh?

What possesses someone to assume what I can hear and what I can't? Yeah, OK, I get you need DE for WAS on 80m (tell me something I haven't heard over and over for the last 20 years on any HF band I've ever been on), but to say there's no DX simply because YOU can't hear it, doesn't mean it's not there.

If I ever decide I need a Delaware QSO, I'll be sure to stay off your lawn.

I guess years of being harassed have made me cranky. :dunno:

Since starting my journey on JT65 this May, not a day goes by (that I'm on the air) where I'm not harassed by some USA station that completely ignores the fact that I call "CQ DX". In some cases, blowing away any DX station that happens to call me.

How many times does one have to be rudely interrupted before they snap?

ETA: There are plenty of opportunities to work DE throughout the year. You have the DE QSO Party in February, the 13 Colonies in July, and Sweepstakes in November. Not to mention some of the WAS nets and various other contests. I can't be the only station in DE with a signal.

Well, at least he emailed you, instead of just calling you on the air.

What he SHOULD have done is simply & politely asked if he can work you for DE on 80 M. The "no DX" comment was out of line.

Yeah, there is that. However...

... that's what set me off.

I've had a few people email me for skeds. I've got no problem with that. I'll sked with anyone, but I'm not about to hang around once the sked is done. In & Out is how I like it. ;)

Although that can be annoying at times, I've just found it easier to either ignore or make a quick QSO with the station. Obviously, an Az contact isn't all that desirable by anyone. As far as preferring in and out, try letting it soak awhile. You might find you like it.....:stirpot:

Yeah, that no DX remark was out of line, but I have a whole repertoire left over from my CB daze like "I'm NOT your good buddy!" so I simply would have asked "If there's no DX why would I be calling CQ DX?" just to tweak his beak. Speaking of dazed leftovers there's "one way skip" that always amused me. So maybe the DX is under a dog pile I can't hear like the only 6M DX contact I couldn't make... to Africa. That's how I saw it, he was going back to one right after another and he was the only station on frequency I could hear, you don't get Africa every day on ANY band and 6 is difficult at best.

Oh yeah, I've been a grumpy old bastid for THAT long! It must have been the RF exposure that did it... starting with this RF and nitro fumes that made me just a little bit crazy. (;->)

They make a signal-boosting additive to help hams put Delaware in their logbook.

When would you like to try?

To tell you the truth, I have never tried JT65. Let me try to get it set up, and I'll work out a sked with you when I have it figured out and working.

I can usually do SSB, cw, psk31. The station is torn apart right now while I'm working on the room. New floor, paint, and all that.

Well, SSB is always my preferred mode. I don't do CW. I haven't done PSK in several years, but I'm game if you are.

Excuses excuses, if you're not up to the challenge why don't you just admit it? But really, if your shack doesn't look like THIS you're not a REAL ham! Real radios glow in the dark, and so do real RATio hams. <razz>

I'm trying to organize the room so it looks at least that good.

A decent 160M antenna might be a 246ft half wave tower with 120 radials...............

You might want a REAL transmitter, a re-tuned Continental 317-C1 with a couple of crystals for the AM window to go with it.
