My grandson asked me what makes magnets work and I was a little embarrassed to have to tell him that I didn't really understand it much better than he did. He already knew that it had to do with the alignment of the electrical fields of all the atoms in a magnetic material, which is about as deep as my knowledge of the topic went as well.

Fortunately, we have the Intertubes nowadays and we were able to find this little video that explains it. To make a long story short, it's one of the few things that happen at the quantum level that we notice in daily life.

It's majick.

Later on he'll discover it's a vast partisan conspiracy of polar opposites.
