So I know theres Gucci, and Guccci.
And Prada, and Rrada.
But how do you determine Yaesu from Vaesu?

I installed the FT2800M that I bought off eham for $90 right? Well the other day the rubber under the mic, where the wire goes in, desintegrated in my hands. And I've since noticed that it is cracking and peeling in other places along the coil.

No problem. I'll buy another one at HRO? WHAT? $59.95 for a friggin Mic? Um... no thanks.

So I went to eBay, typed in MH-48 DTMF Mic and found anything from $8 to $60 and everything in between. I went with a reasonable seller and paid $19.95 and free shipping. I was fully expecting it to be Vaesu, you know... a knock off. And I cannot tell the difference between this eBay mic, and the Mic that came with the radio.

Both are identical. Both have the same button layout. Both have the same red backlight color. Both have "Yaesu Musen LTD" from the injection mold in the back. Both function just the same. Both have the same mic button sensitivity. And signal reports are just the same.

The only difference I can find is that the original one has 42*** on the back, and this new one has 58*** on the back. Thats it.

So did I get a YAESU deal, or a Vaesu doozie?

Either way, I dont care because it works and thats all I care about.... but I'm just wondering.

The good news.......it was cheap.

The bad news......it only passes audio in Chinese.

What's Vertex? Do they manufacture Yaesu stuff?

Cause this thing actually has Yaesu on it just like the real one.

Yes.

It is likely you purchased a Chinese clone.

If you're happy with it then it's all good.

Yaesu is the amateur radio division of Vertex

Yes... and many times the Vertex mics are on Ebay cheaper than the ham ones, but they can be the same.

Yaesu bought Standard from Marantz, leading to the Vertex Standard name. Motorola bought 80% of Vertex Standard and formed a partnership that was dissolved in 2012. I believe Yaesu is now, once again, a separate company.

There are always lots of "Yeasu" radios for sale on EBay.

The radio division is really owned by the Limex Watch Co.

I'll take pics of each one and see if y'all can find the differences. If it's a Chinese clone they've done a hell of a job.

I don't think it's a Chinese copy. At least the Chinese ones do say, "Made In China" on them somewhere. At least that has been my experience.

That looks like an OEM, the Yaesu on the back more or less gives it away. Otherwise, it's a damned good copy.

Well... if it's a true Yaesu mic, I got a damned good deal becuase I only paid $19.95 with free shipping. The same mic at HRO was $59.95 + shipping.

This is the one that I bought:

They very well may have. Might have even sold it to Microsoft or Apple.

The prophet's dilemma: What happens when conversations with God go wrong?
I've been to HRO in Atlanta 3 times. Once to window shop. Once to buy. Once to return defective merchandise.
I noticed that when I purchased, I got home and noticed right away that the merchandise should not have been returned to the sales shelf as it had been returned once before. Then they spent an hour testing the rig, as though I was the one who destroyed it.

It was very coincidental that one of the "big hams" (owns a mess of repeaters) around here was talking with another fellow today, and they were mentioning this too. The conversation stemmed from a local group getting a free repeater... something called a Fusion repeater or something.

Yaesu was split up, the commercial radio part sold to Motorola and the amateur part separated and went into Vertex keeping the Yaesu brand.

If you look very closely at the pictures, they both say 'made in Taiwan'. So, Yaesu has outsourced this much to a Taiwanese company, that could be selling them out the back door, as well. That seems to be a real problem with outsourcing, and is the reason that a few U.S. companies have moved their manufacturing back here. I wonder if their radios are built in Taiwan, or ???

Or maybe because Yeasu/Vertex always was made in Taiwan... maybe?

Vertex, Yaesu is now Motorola, Motorola is now Google :)

And thats what I was told when I called both Motorola and Yaesu and Vertex just as an FYI

I've never seen a telephone keypad or dial with Q or Z on it, there's never been an exchange name beginning with those letters. Another thing, both 7 and 9 have 4 letters when telephones had 3 letters for each number 2 to 9. That looks like a Three Stooges short, Micro-Phonies. Yeasu or Scruyu 20 buckaroos ain't bad... but are you sure it's the SAME mic HRO sells? The one pictured on their website is without the letters...

It's probably the real deal. It just wasn't handled by 37 middlemen.
