Harley Davidson is doing a recall over 66,000 bikes made from 2013 to 2014 due to front wheel lock up at random moments.

THAT would suck!

BTW, I didn't even know bikes came with anti-lock brakes. I don't think I'd want that. I kinda like having control of things. I lock my back tire on occasion when stopping fast or just dinking around, but I've always maintained good control and never come close to losing it. Don't know if I ever locked the front. I've trained myself to apply rear brake first, then front brake to bring things to a halt in a hurry. I only apply both at the same time if I'm not stopping quickly.

Well, I keep up with Honda products, have since 2003. I'm a fan. Ask me about Kawasaki and the only thing I can tell you is that the new Ninja is supposed to be a 300cc model with a 5K price tag.
Yamaha, explored the Zuma 125cc and Majesty models 400 and 600cc. 2007 was the first year they made the Majesty 400 in EFI vs previous models that were piston vacuum FI. The TMax is only available in the used market. It was a race bike killer even though it was a CVT scooter type.
Suzuki, Burgmans mainly, 400 and 650cc. Again as with Yamaha, 2007 offered EFI over previous carburetted versions.

Ducati, BMW, Aprillia etc, I do more listening than talking.

Hyosung, seen a few around. Better than Chinese junk but still not a Honda. LOL.

Harley? Don't know a thing. Recognize some names and types and that's about it. Same with Triumph, recognize names and types. Apparently their quality is improving but maintenance is expensive and Ducati is more expensiver. LOL.
Want a Royal Enfield? Keep lots of parts on hand and make time every weekend for wrenching. They're nice when they run, or so I'm told.

So yeah, ask me about Honda and if I can't answer off the top of my head I know where to look. Can you tell I've been window shopping for a bike for at least 4 years? LOL. I'm like that crazy uncle that always comes by for Thanksgiving but no one has any idea how he finds out who's house dinner is at.

Kelli,

That bolded line is practically going to ensure a fishtail on wet pavement when performed on certain bikes. My Valkyries being one such model.

Gentle front, gentle rear, increasing rear then hard front brake pressure. It's the only way to avoid problems with them.

As far as antilock brakes, Harley has been offering them on most of their Touring lineup since 2008 and BMW (among others) has incorporated them as OEM for a considerably longer period. Both of my Concours 14s have the feature - it was optional on the 2008 and standard on 2010-up models.

They do need an override switch, much as my 2012 can override its traction control and economy mode fuel settings with a button press.

Interesting. If and when I ride a different bike I will feel it out. This is what I've found provides the most stability on my Ninja. I don't do wheelies or any of that craziness, but I've spent a lot of time messing around learning how to ride safely by purposely skidding, doing emergency stops and such.

Yeah, I would want to override that. When you live in Buffalo, you learn how to be your own anti-lock brakes. Maybe it's just an illusion, but I feel much safer when I'm in control of things like that.

I would think ABS on a motorcycle could actually be dangerous. Are the front and rear brakes separately controlled? How would ABS compensate for the unevenness of brake application?

This depends on the bike. My 2008 C14 has its brakes operated separately while the 2010-up C14 brakes are linked...although the linking feature can be disabled on demand. The ABS sensors will take application into account when activating.

FWIW, I almost never use the back brake on any sportbike I ride - unless it's to hold the bike on a grade while halted or if in emergency stop situations.

Yup... most of the pressure on the front, light pressure on the back. Dirt/gravel riding is a great and sometimes unforgiving teacher.

ABS is pretty damn nice in cars and bikes, unless you are an expert in a high performance situation. And having a disable switch is cool.

Got a dirty look from a cop the other day. I was doing 39 in a 35 on a road that is traversed at 50 by most cagers. The road itself is marked both 35 and 45. Some sections are marked 45 when they should be 35 due to residential driveways but since the road is straight in those sections they figured that people trying to pull out could deal with it while the 35 sections aren't necessarily in curves but have driveways leading to businesses.
Yes. I'm always looking for the imbalance and injustice in local government. Like the guy they just told was no longer allowed to play his violin in downtown Greenville because he uses an amplifier. It's an electric violin with a very unique sound and he has a very unique style and the people love him. City council doesn't care. The guys who used to play the drums were louder. They moved somewhere due to construction but I haven't seen them since.

On a shaft-drive bike a little fish tailing might not be noticed with the torquing action. I always used only ONE finger on the front brake to prevent me from locking up the wheel in a panic stop. I had an accident once where my front tire got trapped by a pothole and the bike and I kept going - I was paranoid about it after that. One of the reasons I upgraded bikes was that my old Honda was getting to the age where wheel bearings could seize, and I didn't fully trust my mechanical skills when my neck was involved.

Definitely not the way I ride, unless I want to stop super fast. I mostly use back brake, start with the back and apply more front as I need it to stop faster. I learned that after hitting gravel and even a couple of ice patches when it was really cold out. I've never managed to slide out of control, but I have locked the back tire up and I just slide along to a stop. If you lose control with the back tire locked, you're most likely gonna low-side it. Do it with the front, and you're gonna go flying, not to mention that it's a lot easier to lose control with braking on a slippery surface on the front than on the back. No thanks. I'll keep doing things the way I've been doing them. It works for me.

I have a non ABS CBR. The ABS version of my bike is $500 more new. When I rode the Ruck, applying the rear brake engaged the front brake a little. On this CBR, the brakes ore completely independent of each other, both with their own brake fluid reservoir. I use the back brake first, then the front but being new to this I want to know the correct way to use the brakes, if I'm doing wrong. I've seen guys take headers on their mountain bikes in the park. Seen a guy break his collar bone taking a header on a mountain bike.

Learning how to manipulate the clutch is a bit of an art form. Let it out too quickly into a low gear and you're gonna have a bad time

The other thing is learning which gear to put it in when you're just slowing down and you need to shift to a lower gear. That and making the throttle match your speed so everything is smooth. It takes a while, but you learn all that stuff kind of automatically.

Dave, my forearms are blowing up and my hands feel like they could Hulk smash. As for my feet and legs, I think their position perfect. I have shrunk almost 2 inches in the last 30 years. If I had to move them forward I'd feel like I was trying to get fetal.

The older Ninja's (like mine) aren't too bad. Yeah, you have to lean forward a bit but not like some sport bikes where you're practically laying down. Looks like Charles' CBR is built a lot like the Ninja.

When I'm highway cruising and there's not a lot of traffic, I lay my feet on the rear pegs and lay on the gas tank. More comfortable than sitting upright, TBH. Leaning forward like that would suck using the normal pegs though.

WØTKX
07-12-2014, 10:36 AM
Yea, sometimes you have to mod the seat a little moving the pegs. After I got used to the FZ-750 I put a lot less pressure on the bars... and I learned to do that by "floating" my hands over the bars (no hands ma) on the straights to keep my balance on the pegs and seat a little more. This actually improved precision inputs at the bars. But, it still was more tiring than my 750 Maxim cruiser.

You may be simply holding the bars too tight, as you're a bit nervous with the change to a sportbike, and a larger displacement. Safe gentle no hands practice on a sportbike will surprise you, as they are very balanced. I did the same thing to get used to my Concours, and even got to the point where I could go through gentle turns no hands, just by balancing and pressuring on the pegs. Yes, I used a throttle grip type "cruise control" to do that.

Here's a handle bar "farkle" for ya:
