Field day recap thread!

So, I lugged the tablet, 817, and an antenna about 10 miles from home by bike. It was a pretty horrid day for field day: Humid (80%), hot (89 deg F), and blegh. I did, however, log about 35 contacts via digital.

How'd everyone's field day turn out? What did you do? Where?

We had 3 stations plus GOTA operating for the duration of the event. We made 1502 contacts, including 400+ on digital and 800 on CW.
All in all a good field day.

My biggest bitch is the sudden popularity of PSK, 14.070 was a zoo, I am not sure anyone confirmed any QSO's in that mess.
The other complaint I had was the folks who don't take the time to customize the macros to be efficient for the exchange.

I got about 185 confirmed but, yes, 14.070 was a zoo. And a big RR OM when it comes to the guys who use the same macros for Field Day as they use for a casual QSO.

Somebody at the local paper must've lost a bet or something, they actually had a picture (no story) of a HAM from the local club sending CW.

Condx were kind of sucky with lots of noise, but still managed to get some decent runs on 40m in the evening at W9EX.

Quit at 3:30 AM because I couldn't hear much of anything on all bands due to T-storms and other qrn.

Got to use an Icom 756ProIII. Great radio. It absolutely blew the socks off the club Kenwood TS-570. It also made me feel pretty good about my 746Pro because the receiver on the 756 was pretty similar.

Yeah, that was me lol First field day, so I didn't figure out until Saturday how to set up the macros for it. I'll be ready next year :)

I was driving a tractor taking in hay and blowing it into a silo. No complaints here.

We had multiple antenna and coax failures, which meant we had to put up and take down the towers several times. So much extra work! But I kicked ass on 20M ssb with my 1965 Hallicrafters SR-400
We had more ropes fail than anything.
We used electrician conduit twine to hold the antennas in the air and that stuff doesn't do well with abrasion. It is great since it has 260 pound test, but we had two of them fail where the rope rubbed on the branches of trees. The guy who covered digital overnight wondered why the contacts tapered off, so he went over to the sideband station and operated there until I got back at 5:30. I was also having a hard time making contacts, but I saw the radiating vertical element from the Windom laying on the ground and realized that it had broke.

The same thing happened toward the end when the sideband station did not realize that the 20m dipole was on the ground, and could not make contact with a station booming in. We switched them to the 40m dipole and had them try 15m for the rest of field day. Luckily that was about 30 minutes before we wrapped it.
