I remember when that article came out, in October 1976. I was 17 years old and had worked the previous summer, as a technician, at a company that developed programmable outdoor signs. Our products incorporated the Intel 8080 microprocessor, but one of the senior technicians got me interested in the Motorola 6800 microprocessor. With my summer earnings, I bought a SWTPC 6800 computer. I designed a video terminal for the computer, because I didn't have enough money to buy a commercial product.

This Byte article, about Morse code, inspired me to design a basic RTTY terminal and write some assembly code to receive RTTY transmissions on the computer screen.
