Spent yesterday at Balboa Park. What a beautiful place, I don't understand why Sue doesn't like it. Anyway back up to laguna for a few days to take care the old folks then back down here to SD for a few more weeks.

Because they would probably want to throw her in a cage at the zoo.

Yeah, it's true. A lot of amateur radio ops hang out in Balboa Park after dark.

Well, the City of Brotherly Schtup has a statue of him on public display, so why not?

He claims as soon as he got off the bus in Philly, a random guy walked up to him and kicked him right in the nuts and said, "Welcome to the city of brotherly love."

Balboa Park was named for Vasco Núñez de Balboa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasco_N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez_de_Balboa) (c. 1475 – 1519), Spanish explorer, failed pig farmer and all-around sleazy bastid. Often credited with the "discovery" of the Pacific Ocean, despite all the Asians and Native Americans who'd known about it's existence for some time beforehand.

Remember, this is the city who's police department once dropped a bomb on their own citizens, and destroyed an entire city block of homes. And the mayor's office (at the time) defended the police for doing so.

What year was that and what was it called so I can look it up?

What year was that and what was it called so I can look it up?1985

Just do a search on MOVE.

Start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOVE

In 1985 the group made national news when police dropped a bomb on the Osage house from a helicopter in an attempt to end an armed standoff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standoff). The explosion and ensuing fire killed 11 people, including five children and the group's leader, John Africa. Only two occupants survived—Ramona, an adult, and Birdie, a child. In addition, approximately 60 other (non MOVE-affiliated) homes were destroyed as the entire block burned.

1985, usually called the MOVE Bombing, after the name of the group the Philly police were harassing. More here. (http://www.democracynow.org/2010/5/13/25_years_ago_philadelphia_police_bombs)

(http://www.democracynow.org/2010/5/13/25_years_ago_philadelphia_police_bombs)I think it's fair to say that the MOVE group was just as much responsible for the confrontation as the police were. Suffice to say that they were well known for an unwillingness to play nice with others.

That does not justify the means that the police (acting on the orders of the Mayor) used to try and force them out. And I don't know if anyone will ever know the full story on that; there was a MAJOR level of cover-up and CYA done by the municipal government afterwards.

How many mayors does it take to burn down a city block? Only one, but he has to be Goode.

Isn't Balboa the one who discovered The Island?

As for the park, for most of 1960 I was aboard the Sperry,
a sub-tender stationed in the San Diego Harbor.

Spent much of my free time at Pacific Beach, ;)
but did get there. Nice place (50+ years ago).

And like here, there's the zoo. :)

KG4CGC, not lost, I grew up here in South Laguna, my parents still live there and our oldest daughter lives in San Diego. We try to get out here two or three times a year to help out my folks and have a little vacation. We will be here for a little more than a month this time but usually we spend a week in Las Vegas then two weeks here.

I wonder if there's an Adrian park somwhere?

Hey, it's nice to get out and see the country, even if you're already familiar with the area.

"Isn't Balboa the one who discovered The Island?"
Yes, but failing at pig farming it fell into obscurity until the QRZoo challenge was taken up and it became a paradise for another sort of hams, those with radios. Sometimes the sounds of grunts and squeals can still be heard on quiet nights... coming through the open windows of the Alpha Hotel. <nudge nudge wink wink>

I hear you pat but you have to remember I grew up here so no real surprises. I do have to admit though this is the driest I've ever seen it in 50 years.
