The best old commercials were the old cigarette ads. I still have many of them memorized.

"Camels real taste, satisfies longer"
"You can take Salem out of the country but,..."
"Wah Wah Wah Wah Winston tasted good like a cigarette should"
"To a smoker, it's a kent"
"What cigarette filter father, Pall Mall Gold 100's"

and this one, sung by Julie London

"Why don't you settle back and have a full flavored smoke.
Settle back, and have a Marlboro smoke
Make yourself comfortable, whenever you smoke
Have a Marlboro cigarette...
You get a lot to like with a Marlboro,
filter, flavour, pack or box"

From the YouTube video in the original posting:

Like most people who lived during the period, I remember the crying Indian from the early 70's anti-littering commercials. Unlike most government public service advertising, this campaign was wildly successful.

I always thought that the iconic guy surely must be a real, authentic, proud, full-blooded Native American. It was a big let-down to find out that his real name was Espera Oscar de Corti; an actor who was the son of Sicilian immigrants. I shed a tear myself when I learned that I had been deceived!

Speaking of public service announcements, anybody remember all those old (and really lame) commercials for Free Government Publications, on any topic imaginable. This was pre-Internet, so you had to mail your request to some P.O. Box, in Pueblo, Colorado. I wonder how many people actually went to the trouble to make a request.

BTW, nowadays you can download them at: http://publications.usa.gov/

Ah yes, the Spiegel catalog company in Chicago, Illinois 60609. I wonder how many tractor-trailer loads, of television game show prizes, did they supply over the years. And how about all those luxurious furs from Dicker and Dicker of Beverly Hills.

Very nice. Brings back a lot of old memories.BTW "Spud" was the first brand to market a menthol cigarette. Then along came KOOL and Newport, Alpine and BelAir. I know what they mean about too much menthol. When I vape I often use a menthol liquid or cartoid. Problem is most of them are all menthol and don't deliver any tobacco flavor. I might have to make my own liquid with a combo of menthol and tobacco flavour. Since I have been vaping I have really cut down on chewing tobacco. These days a tin or pouch of dip or chew lasts me for weeks. Most of the time I just reach for an e-cig.

P.S. If regular cigarettes weren't so unhealthy I would definitely smoke them I love cigarettes but I don't like the risks involved with them.

There was a low tar brand in the early 80s that was rumored to contain coconut husk. Forgot the brand, started with a "B."
If you draw on them too hard once you got to the halfway point the filter would collapse on itself.

You're right. I can still remember Casey Kasem's first sponsor. Sheraton Hotels, 8-0-0--3-2-5--3-5-3-5. They still have that number and it is imprinted on my mind forever.

He was definitely an actor. I read somewhere that his day job was being a motorman on the New Haven Railroad. There was a picture of him in engineer overalls as he climbed into a NH FL-9 at Grand Central Terminal. He changed his name to Iron Eyes Cody, married an Indian wife and adopted Indian children.

Iron Eyes Cody lived and worked as an Indian for all his adult life; he labored for decades to promote Native American causes, and was honored by Hollywood's Native American community in 1995 as a "non-Native" for his contribution to film.

Maybe not a true Indian, but as close as you can get (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002014/bio).

God. I grew up when hip-huggers were the style for both sexes. These things were so uncool we didn't go near them. Or anyone wearing them. You could run inside those pants.

"You could run inside those pants."
Cops love today's ghetto fashions, those baggy pants 10 sizes too big with no belt or suspenders, ass cracks wide open. No need to yell GET ON THE GROUND, after about half a block they ARE on the ground, instant shackles.

Which reminds me of going down the Parkway recently...

When I was a kid we had an orange Zenith art deco tube clock radio. Damned I wish I still had it. I do have an old Zenith tube portable. But it ain't working at present.

The story of the orange Zenith goes there was a bad tube in it (or a bad solder joint) and it would play but then build up a buzzing sound and to clear the buzzing my Mom or Dad would smack the top of the radio and the buzzing would clear. One day my Dad smacked it a bit too hard and the bakelite case cracked. He epoxy'ed it together but over time it fell apart and was discarded. Shame.

BTW the Zenith add John posted sounds like it came right out of the marketing department as opposed to the engineering department...LOL
