Just ordered a bunch of stuff from Amazon for building a HF SDR system. I was reading some stuff and got to watching some YT vids about SDR radio and figured What The Hell.

I bought:

NooElec NESDR Mini USB RTL-SDR & ADS-B Receiver Set] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009U7WZCA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Ham It UP 125mhz Upconverter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LQT3G6/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Enclosure kit for Ham It UP Upconverter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J7EY1Z0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Plus some cables

This is what it should look like when done

I plan on using various hamsticks for the antenna system when I'm on the road. Obviously I cant use it mobile but when I'm done work, I will have something fun to do til I can get a real rig

Got about $111 into it and they say these little recievers match expensive recievers in most performance depending on what software you use.

Hope it's true...lol

I have piddled around with those and it works well... for what it is.

I have used it "naked" and with the Hamitup upconverter with both SDR# and HDSR and it works OK.

I also use the STL stick by itself with an ADS-B virtual radar system and I am more impressed with this than with using it as an HF receiver. Even with the little mag mount antenna that came with the stick, I can receive data from aircraft from almost 200 miles away!

I live where the red arrow is pointing and the aircraft in the red circle is right at 200 air miles away!

Here is a screen shot showing the map plus that information on the right side showing the data being sent by the ADS-B system:

I know where Wentzville is. I once picked up 40,000 pounds of pasta from a warehouse there and took it to Pennsylvania.

And you didn't bother to stop by or even call!

If you get QST, the article on how to use an RTL dongle to receive ADS-B aircraft data is in the January 2103 edition. If you don't get QST, this article is one of their free "teaser" feature articles that they offer every month. So here it is: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/QST/This%20Month%20in%20QST/January%202014/VirtualRadarJan2013QST.pdf
