Seems that there's a new meteor trail that the Earth will cross tomorrow night. It was left by comet Comet 209P/LINEAR and meteors can be seen in the night sky tonight. The shower will peak Friday nite into Saturday Morning (wake your kids for this one before they blast the cartoons).

For the first time ever, a debris field of the newly discovered Comet LINEAR will pass through Earth's atmosphere, sparking a new meteor shower for sky-watchers primarily in the Northern Hemisphere.

"The peak will occur from Friday night into Saturday morning," AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Mark Paquette said, adding meteors can still be seen a few days before and after, but the main grouping of meteors will occur at that time.

The new meteor shower, Camelopardalids, is a result of Comet 209P/LINEAR which was discovered in 2004, he said.

Estimates run from 100/hour to 1000+/hour, but nobody knows what it will be yet since this is all new.

Too bad the meteors weren't last weekend. The forecast for Dayton shows as "GOOD", and I'll bet there were a few Hamvention attendees who haven't seen a good shower recently. :)

I never pay any attention to celestial events. As a rule it will always be overcast here when they happen so, why bother.

I won't see any, rain Friday through Saturday and mostly cloudy Saturday night with showers. Back in West Creek with my 6M rig on K2PG Phil's 6el beam @ 60ft I had great luck with meteors, some burns lasted long enough for two contacts. If this one is as advertized I'd have a blast! Speaking of showers, I thought this guy was a fictional character... until I met him at a BARA hamfester!

He reminds me of a CB'er I knew ages ago in the 2nd CB craze. Looked just like B.O. and probably sounded like him too, at least to me he did.

When they start thinking that there can be up to 10,000 meteor trails per hour, I start thinking of Day of the Triffids...

Thanks Cor. After some heavy rain, it's clear here now, but it's not supposed to stay that way tonight. Hope to watch the show on the web.

We had a beautiful Night Sky for observing. But I saw nothing and gave up at 0100. I did see plenty of Lightning Bugs and airplanes.

Most people on the NASA website chat were reporting about the same thing. If they saw anything at all, it was a trace, or two. A few were lucky enough to see at least one bright, long trace. Too bad it wasn't the spectacular event that everybody was hoping for.

How is Phil / K2PG doing these days ? Several years ago he was rebuilding a transmitter for AM and I sold him a few thermal relays he needed. They were the kind that looked like vacuum tubes with octal pin bases. I assume he got it up and running.

Stayed up until 3AM, with no sightings. Watched the NASA feed but only saw some noise. Oddly the Barcelona radar stream that Cor posted had more traces. They were getting 50+/hr and weren't even supposed to be in the right area for this.

The real reason for the poor showing...

Those meteoroids never stood a chance of entering the Earth's atmosphere.

Checked out the view to the North a few times last night but saw nothing. Some people in town reported from a dark spot and said they saw things.
