Aw hell, I used to do that all the time on the highway parallel with the NJT tracks here. It's better pacing a locomotive blowing for a crossing and getting their unofficial "hi" signal toot toot he got at the end. He must be a fellow railfan.

On the subject of trains while I'm at it and a touch of dumb shit cops thrown in for good measure, I heard the clueless on the scanner this morning. A motor patrol called the dispatcher about a traffic cone on the track a short distance from the crossing, the dispatcher replied "They might be doing some emergency track work, or maybe it's a prank." No mention was made by either of getting it off the track before a train gets it stuck under the safety plow (that replaced the cow catcher) dragging it up the track and possibly causing damage.
