According to HuffPo, North Carolina is known for stuffing KK donuts down their gullets and Washington DC is known for their love of drinking wine.
See what your state is known for and do you agree?

New York. I don;t know what it is best known for but if I were to give a candid opinion I would say, for having one of the largest and busiest and culturally diverse cities in the world yet at the same time having one of the largest contiguous wilderness areas east of the Mississippi.

New Jersey known for glitter? Hey, the first governor Morris, for whom Morristown was named would have loved it! He was a flaming queen who showed up in drag for official functions. Lately the Garbage State has been known for crooked governors, McGreedy, Corzine the wonder drug, and now... you know who... Christie who was last seen flying over Lakehurst NAS looking for a place to land but the mooring tower is long gone.

Corrupt govt officials --Old governor just got outta jail - two insurance commissioners still in jail - New congressman just got caught
swapping spit with a aide. On the good side we got meandering bayous, moss covered cypress trees, Gumbo, great fishing and
hunting, Small towns kinda like Mayberry and lots of catfish.

Missouri:

1) We made the top of the Humane Society's "Horrible Hundred" as having the most puppy mills with 24. The report shows that these 100 puppy mills are in 20 states so this means that nearly one quarter of the worst puppy mills in the country are in Missouri. The remaining 76 puppy mills are spread out among 19 other states. The next closest state is Ohio with 15.

2) For the first time, Missouri ranks #3 in meth lab busts in 2013. Indiana now holds that record with 1,797 busts and Tennessee comes in 2nd place with 1,504 busts and we come in a lowly 3rd with 1,103 busts. We had 2,096 busts in 2011, 1,825 in 2012. So either we are not trying hard enough to shut down the labs or have driven the cookers to other nearby states.

new york? are you kidding me? it's known for a lot of the same things the pacific northwest is known for: apples, delicious wine, dairy goods. oh yeah, and that little city on the southern tip of the state.

california? mass exporter of culture of all kinds. used to be a leader in defense and aerospace but that's long gone afaik. also, that tiny mega-industry that drives the world's economy.

That's the Golden State, my friend.

No, I think Mark Twain dubbed it the 'Gilded State', or perhaps it was SF Chronicle columnist, Herb Caen. Twain said, quite correctly, that the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco, and I remember the Croix de Candlestick well enough to agree with him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_J._Gallagher

I miss my old home and have to visit there frequently. Most of my family are still in San Jose. There were many factors that caused me to leave back in the 80's not least was the price of homes in the Bay Area. A family member was also involved in one of those 'only in California' legal situations that make you feel that the government wants to micro-manage your entire life. But there are places in the state I'd love to move back to, and might some day.

Back in 1958, a few of us Wisconsin sailors from the USS Hancock
went to Candlestick to see the old Milwaukee Braves play (they lost).
It was July, we had our peacoats on, top button buttoned; but left
in the 7th inning--too cold and windy, even by Wisconsin standards.

I'm a Bay Area native too, born in SF but my parents moved to San Mateo when I was very young. Never heard anyone call it the Guilded State despite being a fan of both Sam Clemens and Herb Caen (I have an autographed copy of Baghdad By the Bay, even) but I suppose I could have missed it.

Hey, cool! You attended a game at Candlestick two years before it opened!

CORRECTION: 1959 it was. My memory isn't what it used to be--never was.
Maybe not officially opened as Candlestick, but it was kiki-bird cold.

From Wikipedia:

Ground was broken in 1958 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_in_baseball) for the stadium and the Giants selected the name of Candlestick Park,
after a name-the-park contest on March 3, 1959 (for the derivation of which, see below).
Prior to the choice of the name, its construction site had been shown on maps as the generic Bay View Stadium.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candlestick_Park#cite_note-6)

Nice try, but Candlestick didn't open until the 1960 season. Before that, Giants games were played in Seal Stadium.

I stand corrected. It must have been when the Sperry

It was one of these two games (from the Milwaukee Braves 1960 schedule):

"NEVER, NEVER,NEVER refer to San Francisco by that slur you just uttered..."

That being the case, why didn't you complain to the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (reporting mark SLSF) for using the name Frisco before it was purchased by the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1980? Maybe because it's hard to lynch a locomotive?

NQ6U

1) My family has been in San Francisco since 1886 and none of us are bothered by the use of "Frisco." That whole thing was invented by Herb Caen, a newspaper columnist who later stated he regretted it.

2) The Frisco Railroad never got anywhere near San Francisco, CA, although the town of Frisco, TX was named after it.

Feh.

You folks out in SF have nothing on the natives of Pittsburgh.

Just try. Try to pronounce Duquesne. Or Monongahela. Or Youghiogheny. Go on.

Then there's Versailles, the Township of North Versailles to be precise. If you're pronouncing it correctly, then you're not pronouncing it correctly -- for Pittsburgh.

Sheesh. They still call a soft drink a "pop" instead of a "soda." And we won't even get into the whole sub/submarine/blimpie/hoagie debate.
