Traditionally it is thought that age leads to a steady deterioration of brain function, but new research in Topics in Cognitive Science argues that older brains may take longer to process ever increasing amounts of knowledge, and this has often been misidentified as declining capacity.

Survival of a species depends on survival of the fittest, predators cull the herd by attacking the slowest so those that can outrun them survive. The same principle may be applied to human brain cells, kill the slow thinking ones and those faster thinking ones contribute to a better brain. It's well known that alcohol kills brain cells, the slower ones. Drinking improves brain function, so a little alcohol every day gives you a better brain. Just don't overdo it, too much alcohol kills too many brain cells including fast ones. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but they work better as hard cider.
