View Full Version : You ever had the Mumps?

I did and I remember it wasn't too much fun. Swelling, no exposure to sunlight (sun glasses), and not being able to go out and play. It pretty much sucked big gorilla ones. But that was back in the day when one kid in the neighborhood had something and you were sent to hang out with them. Anthrax, whooping cough, measles, diphtheria, the clap, or erectile dysfunction was no big deal. Go get it and get it over with.

Here we go again (http://pix11.com/2014/02/20/mumps-continues-to-spread-at-fordham-university/#axzz2tvCFgy6R)

Same here. Remember when your folks didn't want you to hang around little Johnny because he was a bad influence? Then, when they found out he had the measles, they wanted you to spend a week at his house? Bastids

My parents sent me down the street to play with the kid who had bubonic plague.

Got Mumps, Rubella (we called it German Measles) and chicken pox all in one spring. The school was shut down for a month. Never had to hang out with anyone. :vomit::fever:

Had all of them. Everyone in the neighborhood did.

In these parts, the death toll from substance (alcohol, drug) abuse was and is far higher than from all of those illnesses put together.

Nope. I had vaccinations for that stuff. You guys predate vaccinations? (I had chicken pox, though.)

Yes we predated them. I had them all as a kid. When I went to Iraq that allowed me to jump the Army vaccination line for most stuff, leaving all the young whipper snappers to complain about sore shoulders. But it catches up with ya! Now I see that stupid commercial for SHINGLES if your body has the chickenpox virus...Good Grief

No chicken pox or mumps vaccine when I was a kid and I never saw the Rubella one until after I got it. Sorta like closing the barn door after the horses escape. Did get the Polio vaccine. It was optional back then. Once in awhile one of your classmates would disappear and never come back. There would be whispers of polio. Do they still give those vaccines out or is it pretty much over?

Hey, how about a 75 Meter Area? Only these are childhood diseases as far as I know. They used to say if you caught the mumps as an adult, it was much worse.

I'm not old enough for 75m yet, I'm just working up to 60m soon.

I never got the mumps. Now days I have the vaccine. My older sister got the mumps in her early 20's. Somehow I escaped getting that.

I remember the first polio vaccines, the sugar cube. Also the scar from all the other vaccines in the arm that left the nickel size hole. The joys of living in the dark ages.

Yeah, but remember how much fun we had punching each other in the arm, at least until that big scab fell off.

I think I had a mild case of the mumps when I was a child. In those days every child got it at one point or another. It was quite common. I was also innoculated for polio and smallpox. Chicken pox was also very common back then, Not sure if I ever got it. By the way Fordham U is one of my old schools.. I attended there many moons ago.

Poppycock, I started out on 75m. Then again, I got into radio because I used to listen to my grandfathers setup and I had met all of his ham friends from around the USA and they were all on 75m. It was only natural to start out where there were people I knew and cold get help from.

Oh, you can't use radio in the hospital while you're being treated for poppycock.

I'm one and it really pisses me off, I'm addicted and need a radio fix BAD!

Smallpox vaccine.

It was one vaccine that left the nickle-sized scar. GI's in OIF are likely one of the youngest folk to have those. I scrubbed that mofo clean every day, even though the docs told us otherwise.

Yeah, I got the smallpox vaccine. I king of remember it making my arm very tender for several days. I think I even have a small scar to this date at the injection site.
