Did we ever decide on some Island frequencies? I'm going to be on the road on and off for the next couple of weeks, and will have the mobile on. Suggestions for 40M, 15M, 20M, and 10M.? Most likely SSB cause I can't do cw at 80 MPH like the karate guy in 6 land. Hope to work some of you during the windshield time.

14.313. No one is ever on that frequency.

27.025 for the AM gangstas and 27.385LSB for intra-Island comms?

Or would 14.230/21.340USB work better?

Yes, but the antenna mount keeps pooping out.

Last time I was there I mentioned your name, they threw me out, and won't let me back in. ARGO

Okay on the ~14.230 and ~21.340, however .313 gets busy, doesn't Kevin use that one to talk to Canada? What did we use to use for 10?

What frequencies work best for your rig, Ed?

DC to light. Minus 160 and 80.

ETA The antenna won't tune the all the WARC bands so 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, and of course 2 and 440 I can do.

K7SGJ
11-22-2013, 04:30 PM
Tell ya what. I will be hanging out on one of the following plus or minus depending on QRM and band conditions.

7.180
14.230
21.340
28.350
50.125 Can't remember if the antenna will tune this low. If not, I'll see what it's do and post an update later tonight or in the morning.

Anyone going to be around for Turkey Day?

I'll be torturing myself with a 10K on my gimp leg in the morning, but after that I should be around. Tempted to move the Icom into the truck for the first time in approximately forever for the road trip next week.

I miss being able to lop off tree branches at will with the 102" whip.

"The frequency's in use!"

In the early daze of The Island, it was not unusual. I'd park it on an agreed frequency for no less than 8 minutes and then start calling for a fellow Islander. The frequency would be silent. As soon as I let loose with the calls, "THE FREQUENCY IS IN USE!" would come bellowing back over the loudspeaker.
Other times there would be a constant, slow dit dah dit dah. Weak, but present. I figured at that point it would be better if scheds were made via PM.

Haterz gonna hate, and it would be funny as hell if examples were made of a few of these idiots...then the news posted on QRZ in the Newsroom section.

Be even funnier if the violators were a known commodity.

How many contesters do SSTVers go after when someone fires up on "their" frequency?

Hollingsworth put the myth of frequency ownership to bed with "FCC vs Misek (W1WCR) et al" in 1999. NCS, SSTV operators and anyone else who doesn't understand the concept of "first come, first served" would do very well to read that Finding before engaging in shenanigans. Especially the sort which will land them in financial or criminal hot water.

Well, got to Austin a few minutes ago. Evedently, the antenna still has issues since it quit tuning again. I guess I'll have to pull it apart. Drove in blowing snow almost the whole way from Las Cruces to just outside Austin. The roads were icy as hell, with lots of wrecks and several scattered semis overturned in the median and on the sides of the road. Hit one wreck hatt delayed us almost 2 hours because I-10 was shut down both directions outside of Horn due to a bad one. I've never seen so many cops in one place in my life. They even had a zillion Border Patrol vehicles blocking roads and directing traffic, but not very well. Such is life..............

21.340 is another SSTV frequency. I suspect Fred knows this.

I question the motives for picking those frequencies. It's like intentionally looking for conflict when it's not necessary.

I use to have that problem on the country road that I live on. Low hanging branches were ringing my antenna constantly. VDOT solved that problem by closing RT 29 down for paving and detouring the traffic on my road. After a couple of hundred 18 wheelers passed down my road, no more low hanging branch problem. The funny thing is they left a perfectly square tunnel through the trees now.

My sympathy to you Sir! Looking at the weather on TV, you picked the worst days to travel. Gawd, my brother wants to roast a pig outside when that weather comes up here.

Yeah Hank, outside! Probably in the rain/sleet. I just dug the fire pit and lined it with soap stone. Put in a stock of split oak logs. My BIL brings the pig and an electric spit. We start at "O" dark 30 with the cookin and a little hard cider (basting the pig and ourselves). I'm also doing venison and rock fish. Cooking outside is kind of a necessity. My wife won't let me in the kitchen:snooty:

/M is officially up and running again. With the forecast for the drive tomorrow, I may need it to stay sane...

I think I got the whip/AH-4 combo to load up on 40M before, but I doubt I'll hear our Westside brethren like that.

You know, that SSTV frequency suggestion was only halfway in jest - how many folks here are equipped to run the mode, and how well would an Island T-Day SSTV Net go over?

I could show off my messy shack...
