Any honest search for the planet’s best thoroughbred sports car will include a flight to Amsterdam and a 40-min train ride to the village of Lelystad. ( Netherlands)
The D8 GTO is a brutally quick car, capable of embarrassing anything, anywhere and making its driver feel like a track-day deity. And after the victory lap, it will ferry champion and partner home again – legally – in surprising comfort.

This GTO is fast – world-blurringly, mind-alteringly so. The car will sprint from a standstill to 62mph in 2.8 seconds, a feat the new McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar also accomplishes – but with 903hp.
Even if you’re unlucky enough to be picked on by a car that is fractionally faster in a straight line (a Bugatti Veyron, say), the lite GTO will show its taillights as soon as the road bends.

The car moves off calmly enough. A stout-of-shoulder grandmother could drive it in a normal traffic flow. Stomp the throttle, however, and its character changes, with the engorged turbo shrieking like a Stuka bomber in a dive.
The GTO doesn’t punch you in the back like most very fast cars do. Launching the Donkervoort is more like surfing on the outer edge of an explosion. Under full throttle, the driver and an unwary passenger are brutalised, tenderised and squashed, struggling to breathe until the acceleration tapers off in fourth gear

And cheap it is not, starting at 106,500 euros (about $143,000) for the base version. Opt for a fully loaded Performance model like the tested car and expect to part with at least 150,000 euros.
And yet, there are precious few cars at any price that go, turn and stop like the D8 GTO, and few that are as lovingly hand-crafted. And that combination of virtues may just make this Dutch treat not just a remarkable performance car, but a remarkable performance bargain.

Meh. Check out the web site (http://www.midlana.com/index.html) of an acquaintance of mine who built something very similar in size and performance for a tenth the price using a Honda drive train and Miata suspension bits. Mid-engined, too.

Also, the page you linked to says that the Veyron is only "fractionally faster"; I don't know that I'd consider an extra 100mph "fractional."

Does this mean it is of fractal design?

Either of my Concours 14s will out-accelerate that car, and will do so in completely stock form.

A new non-ABS '08-'09 model could be had recently for $7k USD - on closeout.

Invest another $5k for a turbo that was originally designed for the ZX14, $1k for a Power Commander, accompanying remote USB LCD readout and boost gauge plus a weekend spent fitting and tuning nets you 210-240RWHP when run at 6-7PSI boost. The completed rig (including saddlebags) comes in at under 600lbs and can then reach its OEM-limited speed of 185MPH...something which is a little hard for a normally aspirated version to accomplish.

The true performance enthusiast may wish to spend an additional ~$1700 for an Ohlins rear shock, $600-1000 for cartridge upgrades to the forks and $300 for an undertail. For a total investment of ~$16k, one now has a true sleeper superbike that can also tour if necessary.

Tour? At 185 MPH? All you would see is a blur. However, that is probably the best way to tour some places. ;)

The way traffic usually moves on our interstates during rush hour, every little bit of power increase you can obtain at a motorcycle's rear tire markedly increases your survival chances.

Geezuz! We have those all over the place. Pick ups so large that when they park at The Walmart, they take up 4 spaces. One and a half lengthwise. One and one quarter width.
Keep in mind that WM parking spaces are a bit smaller than everyone else. At least around here. Don't know if that's everywhere or just a local thing.

They do that on purpose. It makes you buy more stuff since your vehicle appears larger. Just don't mess with their overnight campers in the parking lot.

You're right. Those camper/RVs have an extended root cellar.

My favorite, and sure to buy upon winning the lottery. The Corvette ZR-1.

Beats out a Mercedes AMG SL65, Lambo Muciélago and the Viper, at least per Car & Driver (seelink).

$100K for the only American Supercar. Now if they'd get rid of the rear leaf springs...

Hate to break it to ya but the last Ford PU designed in Japan was the Courier. The Ranger is a mericun design as is the B 2300 and up Mazda PU. Just like the Chevy luv was an Isuzu but the Hombre is The Mericun S-10

It looks like Wiki does not agree with itself.... As usual
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Ranger_(North_America)

The north american version was designed by ford as was the mazda b series in the 90's.
I guess your ranger is one from another Market?

copied from wiki.
It appears you have a problem accepting the fact you own a mericun designed truck.
Ford designed and engineered the North American version of the Ranger, which commenced manufacture in January 1982 for the 1983 model year and ended production in December 2011. For the 1995 model year, Ford exported the North American model to select Latin and South American countries; however, as demand increased, Ford began producing the model at its Argentinian plant. During the 1994 through 2010 model years, Mazda badge engineered (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badge_engineering) this model as the North American "B-Series" replacing the "international" version of the Mazda B-Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B-Series) that had previously been retailed in North America. During its 29-year production run, the Ranger received several updates: notably, the 1989 model year facelift (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facelift_(automotive)), the introduction of the second-generation model for 1993, a 1998 model year facelift of the same, and several smaller second-generation cosmetic changes in the 2001, 2004, and 2006 model years. The Latin and South American version was re-skinned in 2009 for the 2010 model year, receiving all-new exterior sheet metal while retaining the existing body structure.

The Ford Ranger is a nameplate that has been used on two distinct model lines of pickup trucks sold by the Ford Motor Company, a version sold in North America and later parts of South America, as well as a separate model sold internationally.

Well, shit. That goes against every other thing I ever read about the Ranger; now I don't know what to believe. Whatever the case, whoever designed it did a damned good job. Mine has over 130K on it and it's been in the shop exactly twice since I bought it used in 1997.

The courier was a mazda design and called the ranger after 83 around the world except for the US and a couple south america markets....... There has always been some confusion with the international auto manufacturers.... Like the Cadillac Catera which was an Opel. The early eighties Dodge Challenger which was a Mitsubishi. LOL

The Probe is an interesting one sharing the Mazda MX-6 platform complete with Mazda engines and drivelines....

The Fazda argument is more fun than the Toyolet discussions after the Nova in the mid eighties......
