Hamisland?

Yep. What what do you think? Up for it? Be a bit rugged—you'd likely have to get there by boat from Ketchikan.

Ummm, let's warm up to that one.

Something in the tropics.

I have connections with a ham in St. Johns. We could get access to the NP2SH/B site...

Can you see Russia from there?

No, but you can see Russia from the flat spot on the top of Sarah Palin's head.

If I were to have a bucket list, seeing the aurora borealis and aurora australis would be on it.

I was thinking Kure.Given the option, I'd rather do Navassa.

I don't think F&WS will give us the option, though.

I'm willing to lay money they wouldn't. That's why I said Kure in the first place.

Are they cool with toplessness?

It's in the very southernmost part of the Alaskan panhandle; the weather isn't much different than in Seattle.

The best we can do here is FIESTA ISLAND!

So, Pat, would you be interested in a DXpedition to Ham Island, AK? I promise you all the Top Ramen you can eat...

Huh? Both Google Maps and Google Earth which use the same database incidentally show it on the Yukon River about 200 miles west of Fairbanks. In any case I'm in the last stage of fattening up before I go into hibernation so I won't be able to make it. When I thaw out I probably can make it to Ham Island in Barnegat Bay just off Long Beach Island, you can use IOTA NJ111 if you want to only be sure the shelters are bug proof because if the wind is right you'll be battling the biggest, meanest mosquitoes you've ever seen, biting flies such as green heads and horse flies and the ever present no see 'ems that are so named for a good reason. You can't see Russia from there but at night you'll easily spot the W2WSC tower at the foot of Murphy Road in West Creek. Still it's better than Alaska that in winter gets down to -60 on a good day and in summer has flies that will eat you alive and have been known to tear through cabin walls and carry people off to feed their young.

Just because you're unable to use Google Maps/Earth well doesn't mean that I'm wrong. There are two Ham Islands in AK—the one you mentioned in the Yukon River and the far more accessible one in the Alexander Archipelago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Archipelago). The latter is the one I'm proposing for our Island of Misfit Hams DXpedition. There are several reasons for that, one major reason being that IOTA does not recognize islands in rivers.

OK I'm unable to use Google Maps/Earth, I don't know any other way than type in "Ham Island, Alaska" so if you know some other way I'm interested in learning. Did I say you're wrong? Sorry if I did, it's just that I have a head like a sieve and CRS/CRAFT doesn't help.

It sounds like a load of fun, or a horrible disaster waiting to happen. Either way, I bet it would be quite an adventure. If I had time to save some shekels, I think this would be one of my bucket list trips.

Its a goal of mine to do a DXpedition, even an IOTA trip. The travel and logistics, along with all the holdups and potential problems would be worth the payoff of putting something new on the air.

I'd rather rent out some Caribbean QTH for a week. Who cares if they're on every CQWW, give me a neverending supply of mojitos, pileups, and twentysomething Dutch/French tourists.

I take it that we will be leaving our spouses/significant others at home, then, if we're also crusing for young touristas?

There is a town called Ham Lake, MN.

There is a large lake called Ham Lake nearby, with a large island.

Oh, wait, it's called "Temperance Island". Never mind. :neener:

We did an Alaska cruise tour this year, so now I might be able to afford a trip to Grand Island, Nebraska, or the Prairie Island Casino if I don't gamble. I'm only 8 miles from Pine Island, MN, but there's no island there at all - it was once a bunch of pine trees on the prairie. And, ever since the A+W there closed down, I have not had a reason to go there.

Barry Zevan the Weather Man asks...

"Where the hell is Pine Island"?

That's a shame about the A&W, I remember going there when it was "old-skool" like the one in Waseca used to be...
