Now I just have to put it together. Half of it came about two weeks ago, the other half came today. It's a BitX20 with digital display. Will do 8 watts PEP on 20 meters, supposedly. Not sure when I'll have time to put it together, possibly next weekend. When I do, I'll be looking to test it out with you dorks. :)

The Queen Of Dorks feels likewise.

A 6 foot dork is a really big dick. A 6 foot Dick is a Cheney.

Hello.

Well that, that's just a swell thing.

What mode will you be doing?

What mode will you be doing? From the BitX20 Yahoo Group Description:
Group Description
BITX20 is a bidirectional SSB transceiver for the 20m amateur radio band, designed and built by Ashhar Farhan, 2004. The project details are on http://www.phonestack.com/farhan/bitx.html . < snip >So I'd presume SSB. OTOH, it's been 10 years since the original design, so...

... I also see that Hendricks QRP Kits (http://www.qrpkits.com/bitx20a.html)is selling their own version of the BITX20 (http://www.qrpkits.com/bitx20a.html)for either 20 or 17. Is that where you got this, Kell?

Well, she might go digital, too.

Nope. I saw their kit but it was way too expensive for my budget. I actually bought it in two pieces from India. My plan is to do digital modes with it. At some point I will probably roll my own amp and then do straight-up phone with it too.

Designing and building my own rig from scratch does interest me, but I just don't have the time for that, especially now. Maybe after six years from now when I have no more kids in the house and finally have only me to take care of, I will do so, but for now, there are some pretty cool kits available for cheap.

In six years home grown rigs will be exactly that, home GROWN. Your electrical engineering will be obsolete, I suggest you study biology/genetic engineering and learn how to design radio seeds.

I've started the preliminary stages of designing a modular all-mode IF section which will use band modules to net the various ranges on which I wish to operate. Like you, there are far too many irons in the fire here at the moment.

Throw another log on the fire.

But be careful. You don't want to end up as a smoked ham.

Question from the Peanut Gallery. Did you buy direct from India and does it come through our customs pretty fast? Any customs fees?

Yes I did. No customs fees that I'm aware of. The first package took forever. Like almost a month. I think it came across the ocean on a camel's back. It also came opened up, probably by customs, and a couple of things were missing. The second package came much faster (less than two weeks) even though it was shipped the same exact way, and it was not opened. It also contained the missing stuff from the first package.

EDIT: I was skeptical about buying something from a seller in India but the guy was very communicative and took good care of everything.

Oh hell, I'm not worried about the Indians or the Chinese for that matter. They want a good rep to make money in America. However, I consider the US Customs and Homeland Security to be a "crap shoot". They can hold up things for a million reasons and never give you an excuse. As far as electronics goes, that is on the top of their "Whoa what's this?" list. Thanks
